Waters north of Greenland have opened up for the first time on record. The thick ice which usually covers the area all year has melted. Scientists are blaming global warming.
Warm winds and unseasonal heat warmed the ice until it broke apart. Because the seas north of Greenland are covered in such thick ice, and ....................... this before, scientists have often called it "the last icy area." But they ' have to reconsider that now. It looks like the last icy area may be farther west.
The ice north of Greenland is over 4 m thick on average and in some places up to 20 m. It's very tightly packed.......................... That's why we never see open water there. However, winds have pushed the ice away from the shore twice now this year - once in February and once in August. If the trend continues, we might gain a new sea route through the Arctic!
