Biography

Ben Franklin was born on Jan. 17th of 1706. He was one of 17 children. After leaving high school at the age of 10, Franklin began working for his father. Shortly after he became an apprentice to his brother and starting working in printing. When he was 17 he left Boston and moved to Philadelphia and opened his own printing shop. At his printing shop he started creating his very own newspaper and annual publication called Poor Richards Almanack. This Almanack contained information, observations, and advice. His Almanack became extremely popular giving Franklin a name for being a talented writer.

At the age of 24, he retired from printing to study science. Franklin became a very successful scientist. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals and a new type of stove- confirming the laws of electricity. He also contributed to the understandings of earthquakes and ocean currents.

Franklin played an important part in drafting the Declaration of Independence, and enlisting French support during the Revolutionary War.

What Has He written?

  • Poor Richards Almanack
  • Almanack: An annual calendar containing important dates and statistical information such as astronomical data and tide tables.
  • A handbook, typically published annually, containing information of general interest or on a sport or pastime.

  • Franklin’s greatest business accomplishment was his publication of, Poor Richard’s Almanack. On December 19, 1732 Franklin published his first almanack under the identify of Richard Saunders. The almanack was published for the year of 1733 and was published once a year for the next 25 years.
  • The almanack included information such as the calendar, weather predictions, sayings, poems and demographics. It also included recipes, trivia, advice, aphorisms, and proverbs about industry and frugality. Franklin considered it a vehicle of instruction for common people who could not afford books, a literature for the masses. Almanacs were the most read secular books in the colonies.

An Aphorism is a short, concise statement expressing a wise and or clever observation or general truth. A variety of devices make aphorism easy to remember. Some contain rhymes or repeat words and sounds; others contain two phrases that present contracting ideas using the same grammatical structure.

  • EX: When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

You will be given a handful of Aphorism to explain... On the google slides you will explaining the literal meaning and the metaphorical meaning.

Ex. “If your head is wax, don’t walk in the sun.”

Literal meaning: A wax head will melt in the sun, so you should stay out of it or you will die.

Metaphorical meaning: If you are shallow and stupid, don’t try new things or new ideas because you can’t handle them.
