1889
In 1889, Sir Henry Parkes, who was the Premier of New South Wales announced that they should become a federation. At the time, Australia was made of six British colonies. They all had their own separate things, but the system became more and more inefficient which was noticed by Henry Parkes.
The Australasian Federation Conference suggests holding a draft for the constitution of Australia. Then, they held the conference in Sydney.
However, in this time, the economic depression meant that the parliaments governing the separate colonies stopped worrying about the idea of federation.
The colonies decide to hold a new federation convention, with a second people's conference held in Bathurst-New South Wales, yet another federation convention was needed.
1897-1898
The second National Australiasian Covention meets again in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, and in the end agrees to the convention that was proposed.
In January, the premiers of the colonies held a secret meeting, agreeing to several changes in the constitution. Between the months of April and July, votes were held in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania with a majority voting 'yes'. Then in September, Queensland citizens approved og the constitution.
In March, a group of representatives travelled to London in order to showcase their constitution to the British Parliament. On July 5th, the British Parliament created the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act, then on the 9th, the Queen of England signed the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act. After that on the 31st, Western Australia held a a majority vote where an overwhelming majority of the voters voted yes.
On the 1st of January, the Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed in the Centennial Park in Sydney, and then on the 29th and 30th of March, elections were held. On May 9th, the Duke of Cornwall and York opened the first Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia in the Exhibition Building in Melbourne.
