Graffiti

The late 1970s,

A little bit of history

is when graffiti really took off. People started writing their names or “tagging” buildings. In the early days, the taggers were often part of street gangs .

Soon graffiti began to be viewed as an art form.

By the 1980s,

graffiti was viewed as a major problem. Resources were poured into attempting to stop graffiti. Measures have been taken to try to prevent graffiti, such as fences and harsher police.

The Graffiti "Problem"

According to New York city mayor Ed Koch,

"A lack of authoritarian power"

“Graffiti was evidence of a lack of authoritarian order, such as, the presence of graffiti had a psychological effect that made all citizens its victim through a disruption of the visual order, thus promoting a feeling of confusion and fear among people.”

Nowadays,

So then why do artists continue to do it..?

graffiti is less often used as a way for gangs to mark their territory. Instead, it has become more of an act of defiance and political issue. Graffiti challenges the mainstream ideas of what counts as art, what counts as public space, and what counts as property.

A few well known graffiti artists include:

Jean-Michel Basquiat, Blek le Rat, and Banksy.

Modern day graffiti,

often involves the use of spray paint and paint markers. Stencils also play a big role in graffiti.

How does it work? What type of materials are used?

A stencil is a paper or cardboard cut out that artists often tape to surfaces and then paint over.

Stencils allow for an image to be installed very quickly and they are reusable and repeatable, as well as offering a very clean and graphic style.
