Scott is the “smart kid” in his friend group which makes him start trying to keep all of his friends. He has a crush who recently became beautiful and he doesn’t know how to talk to her. From a complicated family and friends, a truckload of homework, and trying to find his place in school Scott struggles but he makes it through alive.

Thematic Summary

In the book Sleeping Freshman Never Lie by David Lubar, Scott Hudson is a high school freshman who tries to make it through the year. He made a personal motto, but soon some of his longtime friends drift away. A new kid who joins late suddenly becomes his friend along with the school bully, who scares anyone who tries to hurt Scott. Many unexpected things happen to him and his family throughout the year. One theme that can be taken from the story is unexpected things may happen at any time, but they all happen for a reason. This can be a theme because Scott is afraid of the higher grade students, but suddenly one of the toughest kids becomes his friend and protects and scares other students from hurting Scott. Another reason why this can be a theme is he gets an unexpected friend, the new girl, and soon after failing to impress his crush he realizes that she was the one he actually liked and ended up in a relationship with her. Overall, the theme of Sleeping Freshman Never Lie by David Lubar could be unexpected things may happen at any time to you, but everything happens for a reason.

Mirror 1

Scott and I both share a truckload of homework

1

Lens:Homework

Just like Scott we also have a lot of homework. Scott often procrastinates his work and leaves it to the weekend which is often what we do. He usually procrastinates because he is busy most of the time and can't do it during the week similar to us.

Lens:Books

I like to read books to get comfort, so I can relate to Scott who also reads for comfort. The story shows that Scott reads for a reason and that is because he met a kid in the hospital who recomended a book to Scott and after the kid passed away he gave Scott all of his books. Scott started to read all of them and started to enjoy books. He also enjoys it when he reads out loud to his mom.

Lens:English Class

We always really enjoy learning stuff in english class,so we can relate to how Scott also likes to learn in english. Scott always uses the skills he learns in english in the letters he leaves his younger brother. He also uses them when he has to write new entries for the school newspaper.

One of the main characters peers is very talkative. We cannot relate to his experiences because we are generally less talkative people. In the story Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie by David Lubar, it states "Left unclamped, Mouth had plenty more to discuss. " This is one of the areas that we start to see that Mouth is a talkative person, as he had much more left in his brain that he needs to say. In the story Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie by David Lubar, it states ""You're wearing contacts right?"Mouth called to her. "I wanted contacts, but mom said I had to wait until I got more responsible. Just because I let my braces get gunked up and had all those cavities. And lost my retainer three times. Well really, two times. The other time, my dog ate it, so that doesn't count. You have a dog?" In this statement from the story, Mouth, doesn't let the other person answer his first question and keeps talking. The only time he stops talking is for a breath or to let the other person squeeze in a sentence. This quote leads us to the conclusion that Mouth is a person that thinks out loud many times and this makes him a really talkitive person.

Another window is Scott is a high school freshmen. We cannot relate to this since we are 8th graders in middle school. In the story, it states "We reached my house. Second from the corner on Willow Street. The guys lived on the other side of the neighborhood. I realized that the next time we sae each other, we'd be freshmen at J.P. Zenger High." In this statement, Scott realizes that they were freshmen in high school the next day, as it was the first day of school. In the story, it states " A hush fell over our cluster of freshmen, cloaking us with the same sense of dread that ancient civilizations must have felt during a solar eclispe." In this statement, Scott indicates that he is part of this group of freshmen. He does this in the proceeding thought where he said "cloaking us." This indicates he was part of the group of freshmen because of how "us" was used. This leads to the conclusion that Scott is a high school freshmen.

One window is that Scott loves to read books. I cannot relate to this, because I am not interested in reading many books, while Scott loves reading books and novels. In the story, Scott states this by saying the popular quote from the book the Three Musketeers. The quote is "One for all and all for one." Scott says this to his three friends before their first day of high school, but is met with clueless gazes. Scott shows he loves to read with his incredible book knowledge along with the many quotes he uses. Another time Scott shows he loves to read books is when he tries to get his family members and friends to read them. He did this by reading a few chapters out loud to his parents, and asking them if they had liked it. Soon, he talked about it with his friends. He continued this throughout high school with different people and showed his continued intrest in books this way. This leads to the conclusion that Scott loves to read books.

Reader Review

We enjoyed this book because of the short letters he leaves his younger brother. They are little summaries in the book and you can see how Scott grows throughout the book. We also enjoyed it because of the way all of the characters have a different personality. It makes the story more enjoyable. We liked that the story ended with all of the characters happy instead of just one of them.

Reflections

Reflection

The mirror that helped was the one with books. It helped us grow as a person because it showed us how Scott felt guilty. It showed how reading the books the kid that passed away gave him did him justice. Scott didn't like to read books before he gave it a try. After Scott gave it a try he started to enjoy any kind of book which shows that you should give everything a try because you might enjoy it.

Window

The window that helped me grow as a person was the window about being talkative. Watching Mouth be confident in everything he says, no matter what he gets told, has helped me improve my mindset. It has helped me concentrate on my work better, and not worry about other things. As the book passes, Mouth remains talkative and be's himself and doesn't try to impress others and be who he isn't. This has helped me concentrate on what I do, and not try to be someone who I know I am not. Overall, Mouth being confident when he is talking has helped me become more confident on my abilities and it also reduces stress.

Lens

Using an interpretive lens has helped me remember that this isn't one person's story, and it was everyone's. Scott thought at first, the year was going to be hard and he thought that it would only be hard for him. He didn't really think about anyone else, but as time passed, Scott starts to realize that others are suffering more than he is in high school and they need help too. With this realization, Scott starts to become friends with many around him. Using this lens, I started thinking about how others feel, and that everyone was part of the story of the world and not one person was the main character. This has helped me think about what I am going to say and if it is necessary or not. Using this lens will help others around me along with myself.
