Wolf by Wolf is a story set during the days of the holocaust. A refugee who escaped the death camp she was at is now on a mission. This girl, Yael, has to use everything she has learned, fighting and skin-shifting, to win the biggest motorcycle race in Europe and kill Hitler in the process. It seems simple, but with two people in the race trying to pull her down, Yael realizes she's in it for the long haul.
One thing that makes Yael not loose herself to the people she skin-shifts into is the tattoo on her arm. Covering up her numbers from her camp days, the beginning of the book shows her walking away from getting the final wolf of the pack. Each wolf represents a person that had made a difference in her life. as it quotes in the book, they are "four memories and a reminder". Each person influenced her life choices and made her the person she is now.
The Babushka, which is Russian for grandmother, was one of the first people who helped Yael stay confident in the past. She called Yael special, since she was a survivor of Dr. Greyer's experiments, and confidently said "You are going to change things". One night, Yael went over to the Babushka and she gave her some Matryoshka Dolls and showed her the symbolism behind it, saying how one is protected by the other. Sadly, that was the last time Yael saw her. To this day, Yael keeps the smallest doll close to her and her heart.
Yael's mom was the only one who didn't call Yael a monster, monstre, or монстр from what the experiments did to her. That is, until the final transformation. She became her non-skin-shifted form and when telling her mom she felt better, since she had a fever the night before, her mom accused her of playing as her daughter. She did not recognize Yael in her new form. That same day, Mama got a fever as well, but she didn't make it. The words of Yael's past keep flowing through her. монстр, monstre, monster.
Yael kept her hopes up and tried to stay as herself. When Dr. Greyer showed the affects of his experiments, one of the officers had to leave for her daughters birthday party. He showed a picture to everyone in the room, and Yael remembered what she looked like. When Miriam first learned that Yael could skin-shift, she basically made it their little secret. That is, until Yael saw the officer's daughter. Miriam helped Yael plan an escape route. Yael would go to Dr. Greyer's office, skin-shift into the daughter of the officer, and get lead home by someone in the office. The plan was a success and used her abilities to help her stay alive until the fourth wolf came along.
One day, when attempting to pick-pocket, Yael didn't do so well in her stealth check. She was noticed, and couldn't run away. As she struggled to escape, the person, a National Socialist, found her numbers on her arm. This was it. She would be returned to the camp. However, the guy rolled his sleeve up. He also had numbers drawn on his arm. Yael gave him a chance and followed him to a certain building. When they got there, there were people who took care of Yael and helped her learn and grow. He ended up sacraficing himself to try an kill Hitler.
Yael mainly keeps these people in her memories because it makes up who she really is. Not a young aryan girl, not Adele Wolfe, but Yael. The wolves on her arm may just hide her numbers, but they all have a deeper meaning. Four memories, and a reminder. It keeps Yael on the path to kill Hitler and put an end to the Holocaust.
