Major Events of WW2

Remilitarization of Rhineland

Hitler was unhappy with the Treaty of Versailles which had his country promise to dearm. He started building his military back up and invaded the Rhineland for more land.

1936

Anschluss

There was a large German populaton in Austria and Hitler believed that they should be apart of the Thrid Reich. Austria's government was against being annexed so Hitler invaded with no retaliation and took Austria.

1938

The Munich Agreement

This was a meeting between Germany, Britain, France, and Italy that allowed Hitler to annex the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. Britain and France appeased Hitler saying he could take it if he left them in peace and concluded his conquest

Invasion of Poland

Hitler and Stalin made a pact to make peace with each other if they could split the land they capture by invading Poland. They attack Poland from different sides and deafeat them easily with a method called Blitzkrieg. This causes the U.S to declare war on Germany.

Operation Sealion

This was Germany's attempt to take Britain and the English Channel after they took a hard military hit. Hitler's airofrce the Luftwaffe bombed London for days straight but Churchill didn't surrender and eventually served Hitler his first major defeat.

Holocaust

Hitler gathered over 6 million Jewish and "undesireable" people and put them in concentration camps where they were starved, over worked, killed, and experimented on. He believed his empire should consist of only the "superior" race.

-1945

Pearl Harbor

The Japanese were angry that we cut out their oil supply because they were invading countries in the pathway to the Philipines. In order to retaliate they turned their interest towards weakeing our Navy by surprise attacking a base at Pearl Harbor. We declared war with them the day after.

D-Day- Operation Overlord

This was the invasion of Normandy beaches in France. The Allies needed access to Germany and this was an entrance while also liberating countres from Hitler's rule. This was one of the largest invasions in history and was successful. Less than a year later, Hitler killed himself and Germany surrendered.

1944

Battle of Midway

This was supposed to be a surprise attack on the U.S Pacific Fleet by the Japanese but we found out about it. We were outnumbered but sunk 4 of their aircraft carriers while only losing one of ours . The ships never saw each other. Their massive losses is why this is marked as the turning point, putting Japan on defense.

1945

Dropping Atomic Bombs

Robert Oppenheimer created the atomic bomb which we dropped on Hiroshima. Three days later the U.S bombed Nagasaki. A month later Japan surrenders because of how signifigant and destructive the atomic bomb was.
