Who Is In Your Online Community

So...

What is the internet?

How would you describe the internet to a younger sibling, cousin, or friend

Internet:

Worldwide network that connects people using computers, phones, or other devices

Today we're going to talk about the different people that make up the internet and how we might know each of them. The Rings of Responsibility help us understand our online community. First, we start with our self in the center.

Rings of Responsibility

Community

The next ring is "Community," and this refers to people you know either from your family, neighborhood, school, or church

A group of people who share

a common neighborhood, background, or interest

The last ring of the Rings of Responsibility is "World." This group includes people you don't personally know and haven't met face-to-face. Who are some people that could be in the world?

The World

Think about three people in your community and two people in your world and describe how you could connect with them online.

How Could You Connect?

Now, let's think about what you do with those people on the internet. Do you play games together, send messages, or maybe just read about them?

How we connect with our community online:

  • Play games together
  • FaceTime/video call
  • Send messages
  • Share funny videos
  • Send emails
  • Zoom

How we connect with the world online:

  • Read about the person (e.g., in news articles, stories)
  • Watch videos of the person
  • Listen to their music
  • Watch them play sports

Put a STOP to Online Meanness

What Does Mean Behavior Look Like?

How does mean behavior make people feel?

Some Examples of Online Meanness

Sending a mean message to someone

Posting mean things about someone on a website

Making fun of someone online

Doing mean things to someone's character in an online game

S: Step away

Why do you think you should stop using your device and step away?

T: Tell a trusted adult

If someone makes you feel angry, sad, or scared online, which grown-ups can you tell and ask for help?

O: OK sites only

Why is it important to go online only with an adult, or when an adult says it is OK?

Some sites are not made for kids, and allow kids to communicate with others. This opens up opportunities for online meanness to occur.

P: Pause and think

Would it be helpful to talk to the person who was being mean?

Let's Give Credit!

Imagine you entered an artwork competition at school, and your drawing won first place! Your artwork was hung up at school for

everyone to see, but someone else's name was on the art instead of yours. How would that make you feel?

Giving recognition to a person that created something

Respect:

Showing that you appreciate someone

Pictures and content from:

A lot of times when you do school projects, you look online to find information about things you're learning about. You might find images, articles, or videos that you want to use in your project. It's totally fine to do that, but we just have to remember to give credit to the person who created what you use.

Now that you know what information to include when giving credit, let's practice finding it online!

Remember, whenever you use information, videos,

or pictures from a website, it's important to give credit for the work by including all three of those parts.
