Where It Lives

Habitat

The Barred Owl lives in North America in pretty much every inch of every state east of the Rocky Mountains. They also appear in south Canada, California, Washington,, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. This is good because if the owl is wiped out of one place it has other places to live.

Nesting

The Barred Owl ussually nest in tree cavities, sometimes abandoned hawk or eagle nests, or even on the ground. This is good because if one location is unavailable then the owl has more more nesting choices to pick from.

Nesting

Habitat

The Barred Owl lives in the forest, lake, swamp, and even meadow ecosystems.this is good because it widens the range of types of food available for the owl.

Habitat problems

The event that would effect the Barred Owl the most might be habitat destruction. Without homes the Barred Owl would have to leave and it would effect the food web because they populations of its prey would get too large.

Traits and Adaptations

Adaptations

Adaptations this owl has are typical of any owl, sharp talons, a short, curved beak to hold prey and feathers that muffle sound. They also have a dull plumage for camoflauge. These features help the owl mostly to hunt since it is a top predator. They help it to sneak up on prey, and once it is caught there is no escaping the owl's grip.

Specific Traits

Some traits that are unique to this owl are:It is probably the only owl that can hover and probably the only large owl that eats insects. The Hovering helps the owl to sneak up on prey and insectsare just another food choice if it runs out of one.

Learned Behaviors

The Barred Owl is taught skills to survive in the wild. Some things it is taught are to hunt hide and fight Great Horned Owls. These skills are important to survive in the wild.

Barred Owl Life Cycle

The Barred Owl starts out as an egg,it is incubated for 28-33 days, and then hatchs. Their parents bring them food until they lose their their down feathers, then they learn to fly. After that they grow older, mate and the process restarts. This is an example of a simple life cycle. It is similar to the hawk life cycle.

Diet

Diet

The Barred Owl´s diet consists of mice, rats, chipmunks, moles, bats, rabbits, opossums, small birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertabrae(snailsbeetls and scorpions). It is good that this owl has such a large range of food because if they lose one food choice, they still have alot of other choices.

Voice

The Barred Owl is famous for it´s nine-syllable call that is translated as Who Cooks For You?,Who Cooks For You All?, or even You Cook Today, I Cook Tomorow? They are also known to make shreiks, cries, grumbles, trills, and squeaks. I think this is cool because if you are birdwatching you can esily identify the Barred Owl.
