How Over-Exploitation of Oil Affects our Environment

Impact

Impact

The oil drilling company affects the environment in many different ways, here are the main seven.

  • Drilling disrupts wildlife and their habitat

- The machines can affect communication as well as new structures being build disrupting their homes

  • Oil Spills are a possibility

- Oil spills are detrimental to the environment, but also kill animals, those who survive could be left with serious physical and neurological affects

  • Air and water pollution hurts the local communities

-Drilling can cause harmful chemicals to get into water and cause things like cancer, while air pollution can give you repository infections

  • Emissions released contribute to climate change

-Lots of "dirty" emissions are released into the air when these fuels burn. Drilling also releases solar heat that gets trapped and causes the planets temperature to rise

  • Oil and gas drilling ruins landscapes

- It strips vegetation, increases erosion, disturbs the lands ground surface

  • Fossil fuel extraction turns visitors away

-It pushes people who want to travel to national parks away, expecting peace and end up leaving because of loud noise and disturbance

  • It's causing light pollution

- This disrupts sleep of animals because the glow is so bright they can't decipher if it's morning or night

Who does this

Subtopic 1

Schlumberger, Nabors Industries Ltd., Patterson-UTI Energy Inc., Helmerich & Payne, Inc., and Precision Drilling Corporation. These are the companies that made the most revenue, although there are many other companies at fault.

What and Why is this happening

Subtopic 2

This is happening because people need fuel for their car and other things. This means that they have to keep drilling oil in order for the prices to stay decent. When they drill oil they have to get rid of the surrounding wildlife, this damages not only their species but also the land.

Topic 2

Soultion

I think a good solution would be to make giant tubes that have filters. When doing this they would drill smaller holes and imedietly they would go through these suction like tubes. Because oil and water sperate the tubes would have two different tubes to filter. Through two different tubes, these combined with the blowout preventers that the already use would be the safest and have the most minimal effects on the enviornmnet possible.

How it would help

Text

This would make drilling less harmful because the oil couldn't leak killing animals and causing abnormalities. Drilling smaller deeper holes would also affect less of the enviornment by not taking up so much room and destorying large amounts of animals habitats. They could also relocate these animals during this process.

This would be around the size but with suction on one end and filters on the other

Pictures

This is a BOP (blowout preventer)

Design

These tubes would be 20 feet wide and tall and then 40 feet long. In these tubes there would be 20 different filters and another tube filled with water that would go to a treatment center and be released back into the ocean.

Design

Cost

The cost of these tubes would be about 90k each, this wouldn't be a lot comparied to the billions that they make each year and would ensure safe fuel extraction making people go to more ethical companies. This would also create more jobs for people who would have to build and install these tubes on machinery. This would make the enviornment less polluted and more safe for surrounding animals. There would be little trade off soulutions besides what the companies would pay.

Cost

Solution and Cost

This design would cause a bit of disruption in the ocean, but with reloaction and building boarders while drilling it would overall make their enviornment safer. The cost would become an issue but when they make millions and already have mandates on BOP's this would make less of an impact on the companies. Safety of the tubes would be tested 3 times before being put into use. Testing this would also ensure reliability.

Impacts

This would have many social impacts like creating jobs and also making fuel safer. This would also greatly improve the amount of death and deformaties that animals face because of fuel extraction.
