1. Why does Maalouf think people are forced to “choose between excessive assertion of their identity and the loss of their identity altogether, between fundamentalism and disintegration”? Where does this pressure come from?
2. Maalouf asserts that “identity cannot be compartmentalized; I do not have several identities, I only have one, made of all the elements that have shaped its unique proportions.” What does he mean? How do you think about the many parts that make up your own identity?
