Taizé

By Alyssa, Immy, Isha, Yoonji and Katherine

•The Taizé community is an ecumenical monastic order with a strong devotion to peace and justice through prayer and meditation

•Each year thousands of young pilgrims flock to the small village of Taizé in central France to share in the community's way of life.

•Taizé is one of the world's most important sites of Christian pilgrimage.

Taizé Worship

A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, a period of silence, liturgical readings, and icons. There is no preaching. The style of prayer practiced at Taizé has attracted many worshipers from around the globe and from many different denominations. The prayers consist of “short chants, repeated again and again,” according to an introduction in a Taizé songbook. “The words are sung over many times.”

Anecdote

An Anecdote from Taizé

The first evening at dinner time when I was looking for a place to sit and eat, a young man invited me to sit with him because it was a table for six and they were with five. So I joined him and saw the others coming, another lad and three boys with Down's syndrome. I scrolled through the pictures on my phone and showed them my son with Down. For me a miracle doesn't need to be a weird supernatural event. But I do believe God intervened and brought us together, this couldn't be coincidence. During the rest of the week I had dinner with them :-) how I enjoyed it.

Taizé is something indescribable.. you have to experience it. It is amazing!

I'm surprised to read a few negative reviews about Taize. I've been coming here for over 22 years, and will continue to visit Taize until age and infirmity stop me. It is without question my favourite place in the world. It's a religious community where people come to spend a week or more, living, worshiping, exploring, praying and working together. It's a place to meet others from around the world, a place to explore faith and connect with God. It's where I feel most at home, a place I hate leaving, and always look forward to returning to.
