THE ORIGINS
The predominant method of teaching foreign language (1850-1950).
It was use by Erasmus of Rotterdam to update translation of the New Testament (1466-1536).
What is Grammar-Translation Method?
It consists in translate sentences and longer texts from one language into other.
Vocabulary is learned through direct translation.
Examples: La casa- The house
¿Conoces mi casa?-Do you know my house?
Teacher is the center in the classroom
The student has a passive role.
The primary skill to be improved are reading and writing.
AIMS AND FOCUS
The main aim is to be able to read and translate and memorize the grammar rules.
Its focus is on accuracy and not fluency.
Classes are taught in the mother tongue, with little active use of the target language.
DISADVANTAGES
Language is seen as a collection or words which are isolated and independent.
Students cannot succeed-leads to frustration, boredom and indiscipline.
The four skills are not developed.
