Do you know what fencing is?
Parry- blocking the weapon/hitting it to the side.
Riposte- after a parry, a fencer then lunges and hits the opponent to get a point.
Right of way- The right of way is a rule that only allows fencers to get a point when on offense or they do a parry reposte
Foil is one of the most technical types of fencing. Unlike Epee, Foil has right of way and a target zone,
Foil has right of way, meaning fencers can only get a point if they are on offense or they do a parry reposte.
In foil, fencers wear a gray jacket, the fencers can only hit that gray jacket and the light gray on the bottom of the mask. For example, if they hit the arm, it is considered off target and the point doesn't count.
Epee fencing doesn't have right of way. The point of epee is that the first to the target gets the point. “Epee is a race - first one to the target wins.”
Epee doesn't have right of way. Some say it has "true right of way" because the fencers enforce who's on offense and defense.
Unlike foil, epee fencers don't have a target zone. There are five main targets:
1. Head
2.Chest
3.Arm
4.Leg
5.Toe
Both types of fencing force you to use different strategies. Foil requires you to be more offensive in order to get a point while in epee you can be offensive or defensive. In, foil you also have to practive more parrys to block people while in epee, although you still
parry, it's used more to block then get a point.
