Citra answers the door to realize that a Scythe has come. She worries that he has come to glean a family member, and he sys that he has come to glean her neighbors. She tells him that it's an immoral thing to do, and he asks to use a kitchen knife from her home to do the job and leaves to do it. Later he brings the knife back to her.
Rowan discovers that a Scythe has come to glean one of the popular boys at the school. He goes to the office to tell the Scythe not to, but he is not able to stop him and cannot fight him. So he comforts the boy as he is gleaned, and holds his hand as he is shocked to death.
Citra and Rowan are both invited to a play, and both given box tickets in the mail, not knowing of each other. He tells them a later date to come meet him, and he asks them both to become his apprentices.
One night while Citra is fetching Faraday some milk for bed, she sees that he had already fallen asleep. His ring was on his end table, and Citra decided to pick it up because she was curious. It gave her frostbite almost instantly, and Faraday explained how it is made to prevent people from putting it on and giving people immunity.
Both Rowan and Citra are brought to be tested to become Scythes, and both of them fail. Citra lies about the worst thing she has done, and Rowan says he fears nothing.
Citra and Rowan are told that Scythe Faraday gleaned himself by getting hit by a train. They both immediately think that he was murdered.
Citra is brought to become the apprentice of Scythe Curie, and Rowan with Scythe Goddard.
Scythe Goddard had reached his quota for gleaning, but decides to glean a Tonist Cult, but it results in the death of him and everyone else, except for Rowan.
Citra wins the Scythe ring, and is told to glean Rowan. But she punches Rowan with the ring to grant him immunity, and he escapes with Faraday (who had faked his death).
Rowan escaped the Winter Conclave after avoiding being gleaned, and goes off to set fire to Scythes he deems unworthy and unhonorable.
