DEMOCRACY IN THE PHILIPPINES

THE MODELS OF DEMOCRACY

According to the author Helena Catt, there are three models of democracy which are the concepts that act as the basis upon which current democracies are patterned. (Click the icons to the right to find out more about these)

THERE ARE THREE MODELS:

1

PARTICIPATORY DEMOCRACY

MODELS OF

DEMOCRACY

2

DIRECT DEMOCRACY

3

REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY

Participatory Democracy

Participatory Democracy

In a participatory democracy, the involvement of the citizens is important and valued. It is considered to be community- based, since members of the population have a say in the decisions done in a country. The opinions of the people contribute to the greater welfare of the state.

Direct Democracy

In a direct democracy, the people directly make decisions, without the need for electing representatives or officials. The people organize a forum or a referendum in which they discuss particular topics as needed in order to arrive at a final decision.

The Filipino people's right to do this is highlighted in RA No. 6375 "People's Initiative and Referendum Act

Direct Democracy

The origin of direct democracy

Origins

It is said that the origins of direct democracy could be traced back to Athens in 5th Century BC where people began holding forums. However, it was not completely inclusive as only native Greek males were allowed to participate.

Representative Democracy

Representative Democracy

Also known as indirect democracy, this is a democracy in which the people have representatives that make major decisions and the opinions of the people are channeled through them. The representatives are elected by the people and these officials in turn express opinions in behalf of the people.

The Unites States of America, Great Britain and India are examples of countries that use representative democracy. This is likewise present in the Philippines, as the citizens have the power to elect government officials who participate in making major decisions for the country,

HOW FAR

WE’VE COME

DEMOCRATIC

PRACTICES

Currently, Filipinos are being allowed to vote regardless of their social status and gender as long as they are 18 years old. We have come so far since our country was first considered a democracy all those years ago. They are likewise given rights and protection under the law. People have the right to protest and are freely allowed to speak up against injustices. They are allowed to own properties, practice their religion, travel, and make choices for themselves.

Undemocratic

The opposite of democratic practices, this are the actions that disregard the concepts of democracy.

UNDEMOCRATIC

PRACTICES

Undemocratic Practices in the Philippines Today

At present, many undemocratic practices occur in the country. These greatly have adverse effects to the goal of democracy and can set back the country in terms of leadership since it violates the very rules it has created.

Undemocratic Practices in the Philippines Today

Corruption

Corruption

Corruption is prevalent in our country today. Because of this, many people do not receive the proper assistance and benefits that they deserve. In addition to this, the funds of the government, which came from the taxes of the people, are not returned to them in kind. This leaves them beggars in their own country since they do not get what they need. The funds are not being allocated in a way that would benefit the Filipino people but being stolen by thieves who call themselves government officials. This action eliminates the idea that the people are sovereign in their own country since they do not reap the rewards promised to them. The projects proposed are often subpar and is not what is expected because the funds are being stolen due to corruption.

Extrajudicial Killings

Extrajudicial Killings

This is a violation of the people's inalienable right to life. The only just way for a person to be given a death sentence is if it were the result of a trial that gave a criminal such punishment. However, many suspected drug pushers or users are being killed on the streets without trial, some of them actually being innocent. Whether or not they are innocent does not matter anymore however, since we cannot reverse death. This directly disobeys the rules set in order to protect human life and is unjust and immoral.

Effects

Effects of Undemocratic Practices

People suffer due to undemocratic practices. They no longer feel safe and secure in their own homes because they have no assurance that their rights would be respected. Moreover, undemocratic practices create a rift in the system. It goes against the very core of what it means to be a democracy. It causes inequality among its people, since the people that are most affected by these are those from the lower class who often have difficulty getting justice because they do not have wealth or influence. It also erases the people aspect from the democracy, and without people there is no democracy.

DEMOCRACY

WHAT IS A

DEMOCRACY

A democracy, as defined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people, In a democracy, people are considered to be equal to one another as each can contribute in making important decisions for the country and each has rights that are respected and acknowledged.

Philippines

The Philippines is a democratic country. In between 1917 and 1935, only Filipino male elite were given a chance to vote. However this system was considered unfair and discriminatory. The country has evolved since then, and today, all citizens that reach 18 years of age are being allowed to exercise their right to suffrage in the country.
