The first use of headgear dates back to 1869, when there was only straps protecting the ears.
James Naismith made the first helmet.
Helmets were widely used during the 1920's. These helmets consisted of leather, and some padding on the inside but provided little protection.
It wasn't until 1939 when the first plastic helmet became available, but it wasn't widely used.
1950
By the 1950's Riddell company of Chicago manufactured a plastic helmet, believing it was safer than the leather options. The plastic frame was able to hold its shape in collisions, and it included more cushion for safety.
Through the 1960's and 1970's Riddell continued to innovate and improve the football helmets protection and design.
The big epidemic of large face mask!
By the 1980's Riddell had become an icon with its classic helmet silhouette, with its circular ear hole, clean face mask lines, and rounded dome.
Small improvements were made from the 1980's to the 1990's.
In 2002, in response to the study of brain injuries, Riddell designed a new helmet called "Revolution".
The Revolution was the first significant model in 25 years, and as 2010 Riddell has sold 750,000 helmets

Today. NFL athletes are allowed to chose their own helmets for any particular reason. Some of the most widely used helmets are the Riddell Speed Flex, Vicis Zero1, Rawlings Impulse+, Schutt Vengeance Z10, and the Xenith Shadow.
