Biography

  • Was born August 5, 1861 in Belleville, Illinois

  • Her parents passed at an early age and she was raised by her maternal grandmother who was an active women's suffragist

  • She grew up around discussions that revolved around suffrage, racial problems, spiritualism, social and political beliefs.

  • This upbringing promoted critical thinking and social activism in her.

COS

  • In 1889 Mary began to work for the Charity Organization Societies.
  • This organization developed a structured social work profession, providing social services to the poor, disabled, and needy (especially children).
  • Her ability to explain the organization’s mission and purpose as well as raise money to support the services that the organization provided resulted in her being appointed as the first woman general secretary of the COS.
  • She believed that proper training was imperative for helping poor families manage and change their circumstances.

Charity Org Society

  • She also fought to obtain legislation for deserted wives.
  • Richmond founded the Pennsylvania Child Labor Committee, the Public Charities Association, the juvenile court, and the Housing Association.
  • Between the years 1905 and 1909 Richmond was associated with Charities, which developed teaching materials for Charity Organization Societies nationwide.

Social Work

  • From 1910 through 1922, she developed and headed summer institutes attended by secretaries of charity organization societies from all parts of the country.
  • Her book, Social Diagnosis (1917) was the first comprehensive introduction to social casework that spoke to both the theoretical aspects and practical application of the profession.
  • In addition to her advocacy to professionalize social work she also helped to lobby for legislation to address housing, health, education, and labor. She paid special attention to issues concerning the welfare of children and women.
