Thesis

Summary

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline , is a science-fiction novel that reflects a world that is living in a virtual reality game called the OASIS that seems to be a better place that the real world for humanity.

Supporting evidence

The OASIS that Ernest Cline created reflects the future and the direction in which the world is going in these times. Also, this novel reflects how people prefers to be behind a screen, that way people do not have to face the reality in which they live just like Wade Owen Watts case. Wade is a poor, shy and young guy with no friends in real life. Just like other people in the OASIS,Wade chooses to escape reality. Inside this game, Wade can pretend that the world in which he is living it's perfect. Also, besides real life, Wade can be whomever he wants instead of having to be himself.

How does the world Ernest Cline has build-- both the real world and the OASIS reflects today's world?

Just like other teenagers of his generation, Wade chooses to escape the cruel world in which he is living throught the OASIS. Wade says," Luckily, I had the OASIS, which was like having an escape hatch into a better reality. The OASIS kept me sane. It was my playground and my preschool, a magical place where anything was possible" (123). In this quote, Wade is explaining that the OASIS was an escape from his reality. This line is important because just like other people, the virtual world sometimes it's a place where they can be themselves and also, somewhere where they have a better life than in their reality.

What is attractive about the virtual world?

People is attracted to the virtual world because in the OASIS, people can have and be everything they want and there is no impossible. In the OASIS people are able to gain money, change their surroundings at least while they are online, own things without having to work for it and also. the main reason why people is to attracted to virtual world is because they can even be another person totally different from who they are in real life.

Supporting evidence

In Ready Player One, Wade's best friend in the OASIS called Aeach which avatar is a white male and later in the book is revealed to be a 18 years old homosexual African-American female named Helen Harris. Talking with Wade about how her mother reacted come about as gay,Aeach says:

"She kicked me out of the house and said she never wanted to see me again. I was homeless for a little while. I lived in a series of shelters. But eventually I earned enough competing in the OASIS arena leagues to buy my RV, and I've been living in it ever since. I usually only stop moving when the RV's batteries need to recharge."(321)

This quote means that Aeach is an example of why people is so attracted to the virtual world, even though at the beginning was Aech's mom idea, later in the OASIS Aeach, decide to portray herself as a men. This line is important because these may be the reasons why people is so attached to the virtual world. They can be whowover they want and also, just as Aech did people is able earn money and buy everything they want.

How can it interfere with finding happiness in the real world?

Supporting evidence

Virtual world may interfere with finding happiness in real world because just like in the OASIS people waste their time playing a video game trying to escape their reality instead of living the real world as horrible as it is. Just like Wade realized and learns at the end of the novel to appreciate reality for its genial things that cannot not happen in a video game just like sunlight and physical touch.

At the end of the novel, after Wade succeeds the OASIS,an avatar of Halliday appears and tells Wade:

"I created the OASIS because I never felt at home in the real world. I didn't know how to connect with the people there. I was afraid, for all of my life. Right up until I knew it was ending. That was when I realized,as terrifying and painful as reality can be,it's also the only place where you can find true happiness. Because reality is real"(364)

By saying this,Halliday is trying to tell Wade that happiness can only be found in real world. This line is important because Halliday create the OASIS to escape from his reality, but after the years passed he realized that he spend the most part of his life ,living in a virtual world and that real world is where life is more worth living.

How real can the online world or online identity be?

Supporting evidence

Online world and online identity may be not so real. In the virtual world, people can create a virtual identity that has nothing do to with their personality or identity in the real world. This is possible because of the anonymity given by the internet.

In Ready Player One, Ernest Cline writes, "Halliday is dancing too-something no one ever saw him do in real life."(3) In this line, author is talking about how the creator of the OASIS is dancing in the video that he filmed before passing away. This line is important because this is an example of how people may be a total different person that they are in real life.
