Slavery
-started in 1619
-450,000 people were shipped to what is the Us today
-future slaves were captured in wars or raids
-January 1863: Lincoln abolished slavery
-bad conditions and rights were limited
Frederick Douglas
- A former slave
- a leading figurehead in the anti-slavery movement
- one of the most prominent African American leaders of the Nineteenth Century
- his autobiography was influential in changing public opinion
Jesse Owens
- 1936 African American sprinter
- broke Olympic records by winning four gold medals in Berlin, the headquarters of Hitler’s Nazi regime.
Rather than protesting “Hitler’s Games,” Owens used his position in the spotlight to make a statement
Booker T.Washington
- author
- adviser to the presidents of Roosevelt and Taft.
- often considered the de facto leader of African-American
- gave incremental approach to improving education
FACTS
- Idea of "black violent offender" --> historical context
- Living conditions of blacks are very bad
-->poverty and lack of education -->organized crime and violence because of joining gangs

-->substitutes for high burdens, low pay and bad police training
