List of Terms

  • Carbon footprint - A value that corresponds to the total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases produced by a certain activity or product.
  • Greenhouse gases - Gases that trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere and warm the earth’s surface.
  • Ozone layer - A layer of ozone (a gas made up of three oxygen atoms) in the atmosphere that protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
  • Fossil fuels - Sources of energy such as coal, natural gas, and oil, that come from ancient carbon sources buried underground,
  • Deforestation - Clearing of forests for whatever reason, ranging from city development to obtaining timber.
  • Renewable energy - energy that comes from natural processes that can be naturally replenished.
  • Ocean acidification - the pH of the ocean rising due to carbon dioxide in the air sinking into the ocean, releasing carbonate in the process.
