Viking Pillage and Plunder:

What Battle Strategies Did The Vikings Used?

Strategies & Facts

STRATEGIES

Vikings are recognised as one of the best warriors. It is a fair statement to say that their success comes from their battle strategies. Here are some strategies and facts:

  • Boar Snout: Boar Snout is a method used by the Vikings to break through the enemy's shield wall. They would combine their shields and form them into a pointy shape, breaking the enemy's defence.

  • Ambush: The Vikings would set up ambushes using their knowledge of the terrain and use it as their advantage.

  • They would travel at night and in fog, making it harder for the enemies to defend themselves.

  • The Vikings also used archery. They would often use them on their boats.

  • They would rarely keep their victims as their slaves.

Psychological Warfare

With their boat technology, they were able to move quickly to enemy's spaces. They would bypass their enemy's defence.

The Vikings would use battle cries, displaying weapons, or dressing in animal skins.

The Vikings were skilled at transporting troops and supplies. With their boat technology and their skills, they were once unstoppable.

Surprise Attacks

Harsh Conditions

This was very effective in battles, catching their enemies off guard.

The Vikings were able to endure harsh conditions such as cold weather and waves.

Trading

The Vikings did not just raid, they are known as great traiders.

Shield Wall

They would lock their shields together, not allowing the enimies to get through.

CONNECTION TO BC

World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted

CONNNECTION

TO B.C

When the Vikings established settlement on Vinland (Newfoundland), there is a possibility that the Vikings might have traded with the indigenous people of Newfoundland. Although there is no clear evidence to support this; but according to their sagas, it is stated that the indigenous people of Newfoundland were “skraelings (term used in Norse Sagas especially when they encountered the indigenous people of North America. People believe that it means multiple indigenous groups)” and they showed interest in trading. If the Vikings did trade, they would trade iron tools, and weapons for furs, and leathers. It is possible that there might have been a cultural influence from the Vikings to the indigenous people of Newfoundland. It is proven that the indigenous people of Canada have traded with one another. So, the “skraelings” might have traded the Viking’s weaponries to other indigenous groups of Canada and introduce the Viking culture to them. This is not an accepted or vaunted idea among the historians because the Vikings’ stay on Vinland was short and it is not likely that the indigenous people of Newfoundland get influenced by the Vikings’ culture and replace their long, rich history; but this might be the only way the indigenous groups of British Colombia have connection to the Viking’s culture.

IMPACT

Adaptability:

We have inherited many lessons and skills from the Vikings. One of which is adapting to the enviroment and creating new strategies to survive. In modern society, people adapt to new technologies or trend and some people use it for buisness. One example is DALL - E. DALL - E is an AI by Open AI that can generate images that relates to the user's input. People are using this technology for personal uses; while some people are selling the AI generated art (generating images are not as easy than you think) .

MORE!

Dare To Discover:

Vikings had adventurous and bold spirit. With their technology they were able to travel far away from Scandinavia. With their personalities, they were able to establish settlements in some places such as Newfoundland. This trait has led to innumerable discoveries and journeys. Just like how NASA, and Space X are trying to push the limit of possibilities and spread our existence to the deep unknown.

Who were the Vikings

WHO?

Who?

Vikings were seafaring people from Scandinavia (which refers to Denmark, Norway, and Sweden) during the Viking age (late 8th century to mid 11th century). They were known for their brave mien, technology, pillage, and plunder. Their strategies were imperative when it comes to their success. One of their foremost strategies were uncustomary form of attacks. With their “high-tech” boat technology at that time, they were able to stealthily sneak along rivers and coastal areas, catching their enemies off-guard.

WHERE?

Where?

Vikings pillaged and plundered in innumerable places. One example is Newfoundland, Canada. The Vikings established settlements in Newfoundland around in the year 1000, which is roughly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. It is not sure for certain, but it is believed that the Vikings established northern part of Newfoundland. The Vikings would fish, hunt, and farm and it is possible that the Vikings traded with the indigenous people. Although it is not clear why the Vikings leave Vinland (Newfoundland), some believe that the indigenous people were showing hostility.

Why?

WHY?

There are many reasons to why Vikings started raiding. One reason is that they wanted prosperity and power. They realised that raiding is a quick and simple way to get gold, silver, and other valuables. Another reason might have been influenced by inheritance. Because of inherited complex laws, there was a division of valuables to heirs. Some Vikings would feel that they do not have enough resources to support themselves or their families’, resulting raids. This is not as likely than over population, competitions for resources, and their ego to explore.

WHAT?

What?

The Vikings used all sorts of weaponries; however most common weapons they used were swords (which was used in close combat battles), axes (used for hacking the enemy’s helmet or shield and to blow the enemy’s body or limbs), bows and arrows (which were fired from the longboats), and spears (used for enemies in the distance) alongside armours (helmet, chainmail, body armour, etc.). Although Vikings might be notorious for their pillage and plunder, they were also incredible craftsmen and explorers. Vikings had rich culture of arts. Vikings were highly skilled artisans and craftsmen. They were known for their elegantly designed metalwork, jewellery, and textiles. It is also believed that they were skilled in storytelling, poetry, and music.

THE REASON WHY I CHOSE THIS TOPIC?

REASON WHY?

The reason why I chose Vikings’ strategies is because I wanted to learn what made the Vikings so unique and successful at their time. Since they were known foremost for their raids, I wanted to research about their strategies and how they were able to be recognised as one of the best warriors. While researching, I was able to learn a lot not just on Vikings’ strategies, but also their behaviour and cultures.
