Descriptions of the setting... (in the past)

On page four of the novel Toswiah describes Denver, Colorado outside of her window, "...the moon is a bright yellow, the sky blue-black, the shadows that are the Rocky Mountains. She sniffs, inhaling the scent of pine and cedar and air that is warm still--but with winter at its edges."

Five conflicts in the novel...

Tone

Tone overall

Tone of this section (chapters 1-12)

The tone of these first 12 chapters is very solemn due to the situation that the Green family is put into.

Why I chose the tone...

Why I chose this tone...

I chose to describe the tone as solemn because of the way the characters feel throughout the first 12 chapters. On page 47 Toswiah says, "The raspy voice came into my head again. Felt like it had grown hands and wrapped them around my throat.". The tone can also be shown on page 49 when Toswiah describes her dad, "After a moment, Daddy turned and looked over at me...Something caught in his eyes."

Theme of this section

The theme I chose and why...

The theme of this chapters 1-12...

The theme of this section is that a girls has a hard remembering who is truly is due to her circumstances. This is shown in chapter when Toswiah begins to talk to herself a lot.

2 cause & effect relationships

2 cause and effect relationships

One cause and effect relationship in "Hush" is when after the Green family enters the W.W.P Toswiah's mother turns to religion in the face of crisis. We see this happen through the eyes of Toswiah when the Jehovah's witness arrive at the family's new home. When this happens, instead of turning the witnesses away, Mrs. Green buys a booklet from them.

Another cause and effect relationship is seen when after entering the W.W.P, Toswiah decides to write the events that occur as if they are a fictional story. She does this in order to protect herself and her family from anyone that may be looking for them.

The father's appearance is vaguely described on page 41 when Toswiah describes in his ceremonial uniform, "...my father wore his other uniform-- a dark jacket with a leather belt...We had never seen him dressed this way, and he looked like the tallest, proudest most beautiful man that ever lived."

The mother's appearance is described on page 2 of the novel: "She has a pretty smile-- her face opens up around it and her dark eyes dance... She is brown-- all-over brown-- hair, eyes, skin."
