Direct Object

Direct Objects

a noun (or pronoun) that follows an action verb and receives the action from that verb.

The Questions to ask:

The Questions

Whom? or What?

Jim rode his bike to school.

Jim rode what? bike!

bike is the DO

Examples:

Jenny is selling her blue chair.

Jenny is the subject

is selling is the action verb

Jenny is selling what? chair!

Chair is the DO

Bobby buys new furniture all the time

Bobby is the subject

buys is the action verb

Bobby buys what? furniture

Furniture is the DO

Indirect Object

Indirect Objects

a noun (or pronoun) that precedes the direct object and tells "to whom" or "for whom" the action of the verb is done.

The Questions

Remember to ask the following questions : For whom? after finding the direct object

Will bought his brother a new backpack .

Will is the subject

bought is the verb

Will bought what? backpack

- backpack is the DO

For whom? his brother

So, brother is the Indirect Object

not headphones, headphones is in a prepositional phrase!

set is the DO

cousin is the Indirect Object

Don't forget!

1. Direct and Indirect Objects are NEVER in prepositional phrases.

2. Direct and Indirect Objects can be compound

ex. Mom gave Sadie and Daniel hamburgers and fries for dinner.
