Bioenergetics Mind Map

By: Jill

Bioenergetics

- -the study of the transformation of energy in living organisms

Bioenergetics

Photosynthesis

-the process by which green plants(autotrophs) and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water

Photosynthesis

Light-Dependent Reactions

  • converts light energy into chemical energy
  • the goal of the light-dependent reactions is to collect energy from the sun and then break down all water molecules to produce ATP and NADPH

Light-Dependent Reactions

Light-Independent Reactions

Light-

Independent

Reactions

  • uses stored chemical energy from the light-dependent reactions
  • this is in order to "fix" the carbon atoms and then create a product that can evenutally be converted into glucose
  • The main goal is to create a carbon molecule

Cellular Respiration

-a chemical process in which oxygen is used to make energy from carbohydrates (sugars)

Cellular

Respiration

Glycolysis

  • the first step of cellular respiration
  • occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell
  • a glucose molecule is broken down into two molecules of pyruvate

Glycolysis

Krebs Cycle

  • consumes the pyruvate and produces three different things
  • carbon dioxide
  • ATP (small amount)
  • NADH and FADH

Krebs Cycle

Electron Transport Chain

  • electrons are passed from one molecule to another molecule
  • moves hydrogen ions across a mitochondrian membrane
  • produces ATP (extremely large amount)

Fermentation

-the chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms

Fermentation

Glycolysis

  • breaks down the glucose into two pyruvate molecules
  • also produces two ATP (net) and two NADH
  • allows glucose to be continuously broken down in order to make ATP
  • possible because of NADH and NAD+ being recycled

Electron Transfer

  • from NADH to pyruvate
  • NADH is converted back to NAD+
  • these electron carriers are capable to accept electrons now
  • this helps drive glycolysis and ATP production in

Electron Transfer
