THE UNITY OF THE TRIBES

The red people separated into lots of tribes.

Among the tribes were the Ojibwe, the Ottawa, and the Potawatomi tribes.

These tribes had been at war at which time came a time for change.

Each had a man that lost 10 children in battle.

The 3 men were so overcome with grief they mourned and went to the woods to die.

The Unity of the Tribes:

Part 2

The Unity of the Tribes:

Part 2

The Ojibwe man walked and walked and came upon a beautiful tree.

The tree had roots in all directions. North South East and West. Roots also went straight up into the sky and also straight down into the Earth.

It was so beautiful he forgot his sorrow.

Then the Ottawa man reached the tree and forgot about his sorrow too.

Then the Potawatomi reached the tree and forgot about his sorrow.

They thought that the great spirit brought them together.

The Unity of the Tribes:

Part 3

They talked and realized that they fought too much so they each fashioned and took a pipe of tobacco as a sign of peace, back to their tribes.

Ten days later the men came back with all the of their own tribe and they feasted.

They smoked the tobacco and offered the smoke to the great spirit.

Then all the tribes lived in peace.

CREATION

CREATION

Creation of Humans 1:

The White People

Earthmaker made a hole in a stream bank and lined it with stones to make a hearth.

There he built a fire and then grabbed some clay, molded it, and put it in the fire.

He took the figure out, let it cool and breathed it to life.

It walked away and Earthmaker saw that it was only half baked, he became the white man. of The Potawatomi Story of Creation

PART TWO

Creation of Humans 2: The Black People

Earthmaker decided to try again.

He made another figure and put it in the fire.

While it was cooking he took a nap for a long time, and more than he wanted.

Earthmaker pulled it out, let it cool, and breathed it life.

It walked away and he saw that it was over baked, making the black people.

PART THREE

Creation of Humans 3: The Red People

Earthmaker decided to try one more time.

He made a new fire, he cleaned the clay to make it pure, and watched it carefully while it baked in the fire to make sure it was perfect.

When it was done, he pulled it out, let it cool, and breathed it to life.

It walked away and it was baked just right, they became the red people.

IN THE BEGINNING

IN THE BEGINNING

In the beginning was Earthmaker who made the world.

He made it with trees and fields, with rivers, lakes, and springs, and with hills and valleys.

Everything was beautiful except for one thing... there were no humans.

TREE IN THE WOODS

All 3 men went to the woods to find a place to die. They came across a huge tree that had four long roots and branches facing North, South, East, and West, one root that went straight to the earth, and one up to the sky. They all found it mesmerizing.

The tree can have a connection to the "Great Spirit", and/or to nature itself.

SUMMARY

SUMMARY

This myth showed the creation of the three tribes and how the fighting was meaningless and ended up bringing the tribes to one.

The three old men agreed to a set of rules to preserve the peace and to guide their peoples. This is how the Potawatomi, the Ojibwe, and Ottawa came to live in peace and to intermarry, as one people.
