The terrorists who committed this unspeakable act were members of an Islamist extremist network known as al-Qaeda. Nineteen men that were affiliated with al-Qaeda made meticulous plans to hijack 4 American planes. These planes were specifically selected because they were large, and contained a large amount of fuel.
Their targets were the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon, and the White House.
Osama bin Laden, at first, denied having anything to do with the attacks. However, eventually admitted to having been involved.
After United Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center, irreparable damage was done to the lives of many. Along with the 19 hijackers, immediate deaths included 265 on the four planes stolen, 2,606 in and surrounding the World Trade Center, and 125 at the Pentagon. However, the White House, which was the terrorists final target, was never hit due to the passengers of Flight 93 fighting back and eventually wrecking the plane in an empty field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The day after the horrific attacks thousands of construction workers, first responders, and self dispatched volunteers arrived to help at what is know as Ground Zero. These volunteers searched for survivors under tons of mountainous rubble.
When the buildings fell, many hazardous things such as asbestos surrounded the areas causing the volunteers and survivors to breath in dangerous fumes.
The cleanup of the towers ended 8 months and 19 days later. Even though the remains were gone, what had occurred would never be forgotten.
Some Americans responded to this act of terrorism by flying the American flag on their cars and houses or wearing it as a pin on their clothing. Celebrities organized organized benefit concerts. Many attended candlelight vigils and participating in a moment of silence for the victims. Others leaned on their faith in this time, praying for the victims and their families.
President George Bush made a speech asking citizens to be "calm and resolute, even in the face of a continuing threat" and promised to the US that we would triumph over terrorism.
The USA Patriot Act was passed and gave investigators huge leeway in domestic surveillance activities and immigration laws become more stringent.
