Saul Indian Horse attends an indigenous school called St. Jerome’s, where he experiences firsthand the viciousness of the cultural genocide that took place in Canada.

Toward the end of Indian Horse, Saul remembers some information about St. Jerome’s. As a child, his beloved mentor at St. Jerome’s, Father Gaston Leboutilier, sexually abused him. Saul’s shocking realization cements trauma as one of the key themes of the book.
