The Outsiders by S.E Hinton

Theme: People are not always how they appear to be from the outside

Realistic Fiction

Dallas Winston's Character Arc

Essential Question: How does Dally change throughout the novel and why?

Stage 1

(Beginning)

Development Stage 1

“He was tougher than the rest of us- tougher, colder, meaner.” (pg.10)

Analysis

This quote relates to how people can be misunderstood based on their appearance because this may be proven wrong in the future and Dally may be unnecessarily judged by Ponyboy later too.

This quote may imply a possible future conflict between Ponyboy and Dallas because Ponyboy might believe his opinion is true.

This quote may be related to an Again and Again signpost because the author redundantly gives adjectives to describe Dallas, highlighting that he is thought of as cold and mean by Ponyboy.

I wonder what Dally did to make Ponyboy think of him as this way.

Image

This picture relates to how people are not always how they appear to be from the outside because it shows Ponyboy's original perception of Dallas, which turns out to be wrong.

Stage 2

Development Stage 2

“Johnny was the gang’s pet, and Dally couldn’t just hit him. He was Dally’s pet, too.” (pg.25)

Analysis

This relates to how people are sometimes misjudged based on their outward representations of their character because Ponyboy originally thought of him as mean but he now knows that he won't hit Johnny for telling him off like he would anyone else. This also relates to how Dally is changing because it shows that he cares for Johnny and how Ponyboy thinks a little better of him now.

This quote might foreshadow how Dally shows affection toward Johnny and only Johnny. This quote relates an Aha Moment because Ponyboy realizes that Dally will not hit Johnny. This quote also relates to a contrast and contradiction signpost because Johnny doesn't usually speak up to anyone much less his hero Dally.

Image

This image is related to how people come off differently than they actually are because it shows how Ponyboy's original opinion is being slightly contradicted when Dally cares for Johnny enough to not slap him when he tells Dally off for harassing Cherry as shown in this picture.

Stage 3

Development Stage 3

"Then he too a good look at me. 'Ponyboy, are you wet?'

'Y-y-yes-s,' I stammered through chattering teeth.

'Glory hallelujah!' He opened the screen door and pulled me in, monitoring for Johnny to follow. 'You’ll die of pneumonia ‘fore the cops ever get to you.'

He half-dragged me into an empty bedroom, swearing at me all the way. 'Get that sweatshirt off.' He threw a towel at me. 'Dry off and wait here. At least Johnny’s got his jeans jacket. You ought to know better than to run away in just a sweat shirt, and a wet one at that. Don’t you ever use your head?' He sounded so much like Darry that I stared at him." (pg.60)

Analysis

This quote demonstrates how Dally is changing or showing more of what he is hiding about his personality. His caring aspect is showing through when he cares for Ponyboy's well being. It is related to the conflict of how Ponyboy might not Dally's advice because he is afraid of him. Ponyboy is having to change his perspective on Dally due to Dally taking actions of caring toward him. This quote relates to a contrast and contradiction because it is contradictory for Dally to act kindly to Ponyboy.

Image

This image relates to how people are not always how they appear to be from the outside because it shows Ponyboy being surprised when Dally asks about his wellbeing, in contrast to how he thought Dally acted in the beginning.

Stage 4

Development Stage 4

“You sure you want to go back? Us greasers get it worse than anyone else.” (pg.87)

Analysis

These words of Dally towards Johnny are more evidence of how Dally is increasingly showing caring aspects of his personality. A conflict it is related to is that he could have been hiding aspects of the caring part of his personality to protect himself from getting hurt in case someone close to hum were to die. Dally saying this shows that he knows that how Greasers are perceived might not always be portrayed as good or kind. These words from Dally become a Tough Question for Johnny because Johnny is afraid of the police and going back would mean facing his fear.

Image

This image relates to how people don't always reflect their true selves outward by showing how Dally lectured Johnny about wanting to turn himself in, forcing Ponyboy to change his mind about Dally.

Stage 5

Development Stage 5

"Dally was grinning at me. 'Kid, you scared the devil outa me the other day. I'thought I’d killed you.'

“Me?' I said, puzzled. 'Why?'

'When you jumped out of the church. I meant to hit you just hard enough to knock you down and put out the fire, but when you dropped like a ton of lead I thought I’d aimed too high and broke your neck.' He thought for a minute. 'I’m glad I didn’t though.'

'I’ll bet,' I said with a grin. I’d never liked Dally - but then, for the first time, I felt like he was my buddy. And all because he was glad he hadn’t killed me. (pg.124)

Analysis

This exchange is more evidence that Dally is revealing more of his personality, more care for Ponyboy and Ponyboy is, for the first time, feeling like he is reciprocating some kindness towards Dally. This dialogue relates to the conflict of how Ponyboy misportrayed Dally as being uncaring towards him earlier in the novel. Ponyboy is struggling to redefine Dally's character. This is an Aha Moment because he finally begins to realize that he cares for Dally and Dally cares for him.

Image

This related to how people are not always how they appear to be from the outside by Dally smiling at Ponyboy representing how he looked when he said that he was glad he didn't kill Ponyboy and when Ponyboy finally understood that he cared for people including him.

Stage 6

(End)

Development Stage 6

"...and I suddenly remembered Dally...Dally pounding on the wall...

'Dallas is gone,' I said. 'He ran out like the devil was after him. He’s gonna blow up. He couldn’t take it.'

How can I take it? I wondered. Dally is tougher than I am. Why can I take it when Dally can’t? And then I knew. Johnny was the only thing Dally loved. And now Johnny was gone.

'So he finally broke.' Two-Bit spoke everyone’s feelings. 'So even Dally has a breaking point.'” (pg.152)

Analysis

This quote is more evidence that Dally's toughness was just a front to keep him from getting hurt. This quote and exchange is also related to a conflict within Dally of how dependent he was upon being able to care for or love someone else. His care for Johnny was so important for him that it kept him alive and unbroken. This is an Aha Moment because everyone is realizing that Dally cared deeply for someone (Johnny) other than himself so much that he reached a breaking point.

Image

This image relates to the theme because it shows how Dally reacted when Johnny dies proving that he had cared for Johnny and was not totally cold and mean like Ponyboy originally thought
