In his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul encourages new believers, assures them that those who died are now with God, and - once again - defends his ministry as an apostle.
"...remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ."
Faith, hope, and love are the core Christian values Paul regularly preaches. He is complimenting the Thessalonians on keeping these values.
"You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake."
Paul would always work a separate job when he was traveling and never collected income when he taught. He did this to ensure no one could claim he only taught for money.
"...and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God..."
From John 17:3, [Jesus speaking] "And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."
"...and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come."
From Colossians 1:13, "He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son..."
