INTRODUCTION

Gazing out from the boat at the hundreds of miles of pure ice, you feel the despair set in. Looking at your men you realize they are slowly dying. Something must be done, but who has what it takes?

CLAIM

Survival takes physical and mental toughness. It is not for the weak.

SKILL

RESOURCEFULNESS

REASONS

HOPE

SKILL

"Not only had Shackleton served twenty years in the Merchant service, but each member of the James Caird's small crew had so many years of experience at sea that expertise was taken for granted" (Alexander).

This quote shows that on the small boat that set out to rescue the other crew members, they brought the men that had the most expertise. They needed the skill and experience from these men to ensure their best chances of survival. The experience and skill helps with mental toughness when times get rough and people are put to the test.

RESOURCEFULNESS

"To stave off the cold, they also drank the blubber oil that had been intended to calm the troubled seas" (Alexander).

This quote shows that the men aboard the James Caird, especially Shackleton, knew tips and tricks to help them stay alive and not suffer from hypothermia. They had a resource on the boat intended for another purpose could also work as a way to save their lives. This resourcefulness shows their physical toughness because they had to drink something that wasn't intended for drinking and their mental toughness because they were trying to stay warm under any circumstance.

HOPE

"His calculations revealed that despite the monstrous difficulties , they had covered 444 miles since leaving Elephant Island- more than half the required distance. Suddenly, success seemed possible"(Alexander).

This quote shows that hope is needed especially for the hard times. Hope helps people push both mentally and physically to survive because hope offers a possible happy future. This quote shows that the men had been going through many hard days, and were worn down. When they saw that they had covered half the distance it was a glimmer of hope. They could continue fighting more. Hope offers an adrenaline kick during mentally and physically challenging times.

COUNTER

CLAIM

Some people claim that luck is what helps people survive. Luck doesn't help someone survive for days on end. Eventually luck will run out.

It doesn't take luck to be a Navy Seal
