Topic:

Explain how CO2 is able to control fires.

Subject: Chemistry

Class: 8th

Carbon dioxide is a chemical compound composed of one carbon and two oxygen atoms. In general, it is often referred to by its formula CO2. CO2 is present in the Earth's atmosphere at a low concentration and acts as a greenhouse gas. In its solid-state, is called dry ice and its a major component of the carbon cycle.

do you know what exactly is oxygen?

Oxygen is an element that can be a solid, liquid or gas depending on its temperature and pressure. In the atmosphere, it is found as a gas, more specifically, a diatomic gas which means that two oxygen atoms are connected together in a covalent double bond. Oxygen gas is reactive substances that are essential for life on Earth.

Do you know which gas helps the matter to burn?

Oxygen gas supports the

combustion process.

Oxygen supports the chemical processes that occur during a fire. When fuel burns, it reacts with oxygen from the surrounding air, releasing heat and generating combustion products (gases, smoke, embers, etc.). This process is known as oxidation.

you know that oxygen supports combustion but do you know which gas controls the combustion?

CO2 is the one which controls the combustion. Want to know the reason? So, the reason is that carbon dioxide is heavier than oxygen so carbon dioxide acts as a blanket over the fire, this will ensure that oxygen is cut-off from the fire. This act reduces the ignition temperature which controls the fire.
