Image Formation
- An image - defined as a point, where the light rays coming from an object meet or appear to meet after reflection or refraction
- An optical image is the apparent reproduction of an object, formed by a lens or mirror system from reflected, refracted, or diffracted light waves
- Object - anything which gives out light rays, either refracted or reflected
- Objects can be of two types - Very Small objects / large or Extended Objects
- Small objects are represented by a dot in a ray diagram
- Large objects can be represented by an arrow pointing in an upward direction
Real Images:
- Image formed when the light rays coming from an object meet each other after reflection or refraction
- Can be obtained on the screen
- Always in an inverted form
- The common example of a real image is the image formed on the cinema screen
Real Image
Virtual image:
- Image obtained from an optical system such that the light rays from the source do not cross to form an image
- The image formed will always be upright or erect
- Obtained from either a convex lens, concave lens, or a plane mirror
- Cannot be obtained on the screen
- The common example of a virtual image is the image formed in the mirror when we stand in front of that mirror
- Conventionally represented by dotted lines
