Ulysses S. Grant named commander in chief of US army

when- March 2, 1864

what- Grant is appointed lieutenant general (basically a 2nd commander) and you could only get it by request of the President. Grant gets command of all union armies in the field the following day.

Atlanta Falls to Sherman

when- May 7, 1864

where- Tennessee into Georgia

what- General Sherman marched from Tennessee into Georgia against the Confederate Army of Tennessee with the idea of being the city of Atlanta.

battle in the wilderness

when- May 4-5, 1864

where- Virginia

what- This is the opening battle of the "Wilderness Campaign". Grant issued orders for the campaign to begin on May 3. Lee responded by attacking the Union column in the dense woods and underbrush of an area known as the Wilderness, west of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

what- Lee seeks an audience with General Grant to discuss terms. That afternoon Lee signs the document of surrender. Soon later on April 12, the Army of Northern Virginia surrenders and is disbanded.

what- General Lee abandoned both cities and moves his army west and he hopes to join the Confederate forces under General Johnston in North Carolina.

Sherman's ¨March to the Sea¨ Ends

what- Sherman's Army of Georgia arrives at Savannah, Georgia, completing the famous "March to the Sea". At Savannah, his troops will take Fort McAllister and then they will force Confederate defenders to evacuate the city.
