Multi-Store Model of Memory

The Atkinson-Shiffrin multi-store model of memory is a model that is made up of three seperate stores of memory (sensory, short-term, and long-term). Each of these stages interact through the process of encoding, storage, and retrieval.

The entry point of memory where new incoming sensory information is stored for a very brief period.

STAGE 2

Short Term Memory (STM)

A memory system with limited storage capacity in which information is retained for a relatively short time, unless renewed in some way.

About STM

Duration: Up to 15 - 30 seconds....

Most types of information can be retained fairly well in STM for the first few seconds. After about 12 seconds, however, recall starts to decline and by about 18 seconds almost all of the information disappears entirely if it has not been renewed in some way.

Capacity:

STM has a very limited storage capacity. It is believed to hold

about 7 bits of information (+ or - 2).

Maintenance Rehearsal

Maintenance

Also known as 'continual repetition' or 'continue renewal'.

It is possible to retain information within our STM indefinitely through continue renewal as this also involves sustained attention (focus, paying attention).

Information can then linger in our STM for up to 30 seconds, rather than the 'usual' 12 seconds .

LONG TERM MEMORY

STAGE 3

Long Term Memory (LTM)

Final stage of the model.

LTM can store up to an unlimited amount of information for a very long time, possible permanent memories.

  • How far back can we remember?

Can we think back to the days we were in child care? Primary School? What about before any sort of schooling?

  • Rules of games. Anyone play a sport? How do you know the rules?

  • Writing, spelling etc.
