What is HFMD?
Definition
- Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a contagious illness caused by a group of viruses.
- Spread through direct contact with saliva, blister fluid or feces of an infected person.
- Commonly infected the children under 5 years old because their immune system is not fully developed yet.
- Also can infected to older children and adults.
- Most people can recover in 7 to 10 days without getting medical treatment but in some rare cases, the infected person need to be hospitalized for a few days or other rare complications such as encephalitis or polio-like paralysis may be fatal.
- the disease can infected a person not only once.
Symptoms of HFMD

- Not feeling well
- Poor appetite.
- painful, red, blister-like lesions on the tongue,gums, and inside the cheeks.
- A red rash without irritation but sometime with blistering on the palm, soles, and sometimes on the buttocks.
- Happen among infants and toddlers
How long it takes for the symptom to appear?

- A blister-like rash on the hands, feet and mouth usually develops from 1 to 2 days after initial symptoms

- Often in back of mouth and can become painful.
- Viruses can live in a person's body for weeks, even after symptoms disappear

- The common cause of HFMD is Coxsackie virus A16 and also Enterovirus 71.
