Research Project

Research Cold Cases

Your Mission:

You are a self-employed private investigator specializing in the unsolved and unexplained. You have been hired by the Unsolved Mysteries Association to conduct background research for an upcoming documentary. It is very important for you to provide accurate information because the people at the

Unsolved Mysteries Association pride themselves on presenting nothing but facts. Your professional reputation (and your future paychecks!) will be affected by the quality of the report you produce for them.

Introduction

What to do

The Unsolved Mysteries Association has commissioned a case file analyzing the information about an unsolved mystery of your choice. Your case file will explain what facts are known, what theories have been presented to explain the facts, which theory has the most support, and what aspects of the mystery remain unexplained. The producers will use this information as they prepare the script of the documentary.

What to Research

Writing

The Process:

Research the facts of your chosen unsolved mystery.

Investigate the leading theories (include at least 3 in your final project).

Finally, propose a solution, either by explaining which theory best accounted for the facts or by proposing an interpretation of your own.

Tips for Writing Your Case File Report:

As the world’s expert on this unsolved mystery, you must present an opinion on what happened. In unsolved cases, you need to construct a solution. Remember that just because you are offering your opinion does not mean that you should use “I” in your report. There should not be any "I" in any of your documents if it refers to you! You must stay objective. Remember that using "I" weakens what you have to say. Other forbidden words (me, you, us, we, etc.).
