UNIT 11 MUSIC

TEACHER: MIRIAM ALEJANDRA VALENCIA SOTO

Do you know that "hamlet" and "Romeo and Juliet" were written by Shakespeare?

*PAST PASSIVE

We use passive when the most important of our idea is the object not the subject of the sentence. in active sentences the most important is the subject. examples:

active: John Lennon wrote "imagine"

S + v s. past + OBJ

PASSIVE: "Imagine" was written by J. Lennon

OBJ + v be + v past participle + S

WHAT IS PASSIVE VOICE AND HOW TO USE IT

STRUCTURE

  • LOOK AT THE VERB IN THE ACTIVE SENTENCES. IT IS IN SIMPLE PAST. IN THE PASSIVE EXAMPLES YOU NEED THE VERB BE IN PAST IF THE ACTIVE IS IN SIMPLE PAST. THE OTHER VERB ALWAYS IS IN PAST PARTICIPLE. THAT MEANS THAT THE VERB BE IS THE ONLY ONE THE CHANGE DEPENDING OF THE OBJECT INTO WAS OR WERE.

REMEMBER THAT SOMETIMES THE SUBJECT IS NOT NECESSARY. EXAMPLES.

- The police arrested the thieves (active)

- The thieves were arrested (passive)

IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE POLICE ARRESTED THEM.
