Middle Eastern Migration

What was the push factor?

- The economic struggles was the most immediate push factor for middle eastern to migrate from here.

- The other most cited reason was educational opportunity

- War and armed conflict was another one of the major reasons for the middle east to migrate.

- Other reasons to why they chose to immigrate is that the water sources were getting harder to find and the prices were rising too high in the market for others to afford.

In the late 1980 immigrants left their original countries to look for other countries that were wealthier economy wise, in search for a place where they could get rich fast.

And for people with families it was probably because they wanted to just move to a country that was cheap to live in, that was New Zealand in the 1900.

Who all in the Middle East wanted to migrate out of there?

Which countries were part of this migration?

The middle easterners aka Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen were all known as poor countries back then which made them not be able to afford almost all the basic things.

War

Mainly after 2011, the majority of the middle east migrated and that was a consequence of armed conflict and the forced displacement of millions of people from their home, many of whom have left their countries of birth.

The wars at the time had triggered significant demographic change throughtout the middle east. Those and some other consequences led to most middle esterners not feeling safe there.

War

Why did they choose NZ?

New zealand is know for its safety and its healthy enviroment. It was a place with better income and was a wealthy place to live in. The middle east on the other hand had many problems to deal with. Most people had heard about it and wanted to settle and raise a family or pursue their dreams. A big number of Middle Eastern immigrants living in New Zealand were Lebanese. They mainly came here to make a living. In 1988, the most deadlist wars erupted. The biggest one being the iraq iran war. Many countries in the middle east were destroyed. This caused lots of the population to go down due to death. NZ was very welcoming and was gladly allowing migrants, immigrants and refugees so many tried to flee from the middle east them to NZ.

How did they get there?

There is a 15,541km distance between the whole of middle east and NZ, which is all water excpet for Australia.

They migrated through the Indian and Tasman seas into cities like Dunedin , Wellington, Auckland around the 1880s and 1890s using boats and barely any ships.

What were some obstacles that they faced?

What were some obstacles they faced?

There isn't evidence for the obstacles they faced but there are some obvious ones like being able to adapt to a different place. First, the weather was so much more different and colder here compared to where they came from. Then, coming from a poor place at the time, they porbably didn't much to any savings to buy a house in that currency or to be able to complete all the necessary paper work to either have work rights or anything else. They probably weren't aware of the languages spoken and so it would have been hard to communicate with people especially with barely any support from their relatives or close ones because they may have lost them during war or other scenarios.

What changed when they came here?

A big number of Middle Eastern immigrants living in New Zealand were Lebanese. They made a living, making things such as menswear and wine. They were pretty easy to distinguish, the woman wore bright colored clothing and jewelry while men would walk farm roads selling goods. They created their own colonies working and helping each other.

In the 2018 Census, 70,332 people identified with at least one Middle Eastern / Latin American / African ethnicity. This is 1.5 percent of the population, up from 1.2 percent in 2013.
