Gene Rosellini

Background

Background

  • Gene Rosellini was a character in "Into the Wild" who decided to leave his whole life behind and live as a part of nature, like Chris McCandless
  • Rosellini was nicknamed "Mayor of Hippie Cove" by Alaskan locals
  • Rosellini maintained a 4.0 GPA all throughout high school and college and accumulated many credits without even getting a degree because he believed the only thing that mattered was knowledge
  • Rosellini excelled in most of the things he did, such as yoga and martial arts and he even read all the time

Reason for Excursion

  • Gene's vision of knowledge could explain why he went on his journey, because he is someone that longs to know something just for his own satisfaction, which is exactly what he did.
  • Gene wanted to know if it were possible for a man to survive without the advancements of modern civilization, as a caveman would have in the past. He believed that humans have devolved into a species less suited to survive.
  • He departed from Seattle, or his home town, and drifted up through the coast of British Columbia and the Alaskan panhandle to land in Cordova, Alaska to begin his journey in 1977.

Why he did it

Cordova, Alaska

Landing Point

This is the part of Alaska where Gene Rosellini landed and where he chose to start his excursion.

How Rosellini's excursion went

Details of the adventure

  • Since Gene wanted to see if humans could survive as they did in the stone age, he used nothing but the same tools that cavemen would back in this time period.
  • He ate edible things found in the wilderness such as berries, roots, seaweed, and animals that he hunted himself purely with tools that he created.
  • Gene created makeshift tools and weapons to hunt and get food to eat, such as spears and snares.
  • Gene also only wore rags instead of actual clothes, because clothes are technically a modern advancement.
  • Gene exercised a lot during his expedition by doing things with a load of rocks on his back for apparently up to 18 miles a day.
  • After about a decade of living like a caveman, Gene decided that humans couldn't live without the new advancements of society.
  • Gene Rosellini's body was found on the floor of his shack with a seemingly self inflicted stab wound in November 1991.
  • It is commonly believed that the reason for Gene's suicide was because he felt as if he failed in his life's greatest experiment.

Types of tools

Examples of what he used to live

While Gene Rosellini was living out in the wilderness, he utilized tools such as spears and snares in order to get food. He also wore things like rags instead of actual clothes, since this is what less developed humans did as well.

Those affected by his death

The main people who must have been affected by Gene's death include:

  • His step father, Victor Rosellini, a rich restaurant owner in Seattle
  • His cousin, Albert Rosellini, the very popular governor of Washington state from 1957 to 1965

Albert Rosellini

A cool thing to know about Albert Rosellini is that he was actually the oldest man to ever be a united states governor, as he made to almost 102 years old!

Traits that him and Chris McCandless shared include:

How he related to Chris

  • They both left a privileged life to start their journeys into the wild
