Imam Abu Hanifa was born in the city of Kufa in Iraq, during the reign of the powerful Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan.
His father, Thabit bin Zuta, a trader from Kabul, Afghanistan, was 40 years old at the time of Abu Hanifah’s birth.
His ancestry is generally accepted as being of non-Arab origin as suggested by the etymology of the names of his grandfather (Zuta) and great-grandfather (Mah). The historian, Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, records a statement from Imam Abu Hanīfah’s grandson, Ismail bin Hammad, who gave Abu Hanifah’s lineage as Thabit bin Numan bin Marzban and claiming to be of Persian origin.

Like the prophet Imam Abu-Hanifa had many proffesions of which were an imam to lead his nation and a Lawyer as well as a Theologian like most muslim scholars.
He was born in the city of Kufa, Iraq in 699 AD and lived in the city of Baghdad. He was described by his students as very pious, remaining silent and absorbed in his thoughts most of the time. He didn’t speak unless he had to, answering questions only if he knew the answers to them. He shunned the company of the worldly-minded people and people who had worldly power. He avoided gossip and slander and only spoke well about people even if there wasn’t anything good to talk good about that particular person. This was the description of Imam Abu Hanifa by his students.

Imam of Imams; Lamp of the Ummah; Leader of the Jurists and Mujtahideen; Hafize-Hadith Hadhrat Imam Abu Hanifah (may Allāh be pleased with him) was a prestigious Mujtahid, Muhaddith, authoritative person, truthfully spoken, abstinent, wise, and pious.
Under his father’s paternal direction, Abu Hanifa memorized the Quran. He grew in Kufa, first as a student, then a merchant, then as a student, and finally a teacher and expert of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh).
The greatest contribution of Imam Abu Hanifa towards development of Islam is to the Fiqh. Through his efforts, the first school of Fiqh, the Hanafi school, developed. His school has the largest number of followers among the four imams.
Abu Hanifa's theological school is what would later develop into the Maturidi school of Sunni theology. He is also considered a renowned Islamic scholar and personality by Sunni Muslims.
