strategies to be competitive

I) PROCESS STRATEGY

NiSi use product focus as the process strategy. High volume, low-variety prosses are product focused.

II) CAPACITY

NiSi uses intermediate range planning as the capacity planning because the products (usually 3 to 36 months), we can add equipment, personnel and shift, we can subcontract and we build or us inventory. This is the “agregat planning” task.

Design and Effective Capacity

Design capacity

If machines at 2Pii are designed to produce 250 units of helmet /hr , and the plant operates 12hrs/day

Design Capacity = 250 units/hr. X 12hrs

= 3000 units/day

Effective capasity

If 2Pii loses 3 hours of output per day (0.5 hrs./day on preventive maintenance + 1 hr./day on employee breaks + 1.5 hrs./day setting up machines for different products.

Effective capacity = 3000 units/day - (250units/hr)(3hrs./day)

=2250 units/day

Actual output

On average, if machine at 2Pii are not running 1 hour/day due to late parts and machine breakdowns.

Actual Output = 2250 units/day - (250 units/hr)(1 hr/day)

= 2250 units - 250 units/day

= 2000 units/day

Utilization

Utilization = Actual Output / Design Capacity

= 2000units/ day / 3000 units /day

= 66.7

Efficiency

= Actual Output / Effective Capasity

=2000 units/day / 2250 units/day

= 88.9%

LOCATION STRATEGY

NISI choose Product-Oriented Layout as the layout strategy.
