The Entertainment industry in the Philippines has been a powerful force in defining Popular Culture here in the Philippines. Often the Culture of the time is characterized by what was being played in the radio, what was being watch, and what was popular in the general public

Television

Television has been part of the daily life of people. Aside from they gather information through news and gets entertainment through dramas or what that is projected there, it became as a source of joy too.

Television in the Philippines is dominated by three networks ABS-CBN, GMA, and TV-5. Most of the shows aired are variety shows, tv dramas, and game shows.

The Most Prominent being that of TV dramas or more locally known as Teleseryes that Air an episodic series daily.

ABS-CBN

Alto Broadcasting System and Chronicle Broadcasting Network has been one of the leading networks in the Philippines until its unsuccessful franchise renewal in 2020. ABS-CBN continues to broadcast its shows in their Youtube channel in a livestream called Kapamilya Live.

Its Current prominent Teleserye is Ang Probinsyano based on the movie Franchise of Fernando Poe Jr.

GMA

Global Media Arts is one of the leading Broadcasting companies here in the Philippines. First covering the Greater Manila Area it then started broadcasting through out the archipelago.

Its most prominent show that it airs is the Variety show Eat Bulaga

TV-5

TV-5 is a broadcasting network in the Philippines which is formerly known as the ABC network. Currently it host the shows Produced by ABS-CBN like Ang Probinsyano

Its most famous show is the reality show known as Face-to-Face

In the Philippines, the movie industry continues to boom as “movie going” has never been old. Aside from the cheap ticket price, the increase production of foreign film especially American films each year and the increasing popularity of films among people who loves going to a movie, has a big attribution when it comes to this industry. Romance, action and independent productions are the hottest picks and favorites here in the Philippines.

Romance Films specifically Rom-Coms have dominated the cinema industry here in the Philippines.the current local entertainment industry is supported by love teams. Almost all of our established local stars had, at least in one point in their careers, been part of a love team. There’s just something with seeing two beautiful people falling for each other on the big screen that clicks with most Filipinos. Hence, love teams became the most effective way to build a budding star’s fanbase.

The Rom Com was basically designed for this as it lets the love story be the focal point of the movie.

Action Films

Though it has been in a decline since the turn of the century. We cannot talk about the Philippine Cinema without mentioning Action Films and its impact in Pop-Culture in the Philippines. Action films produced many well-known stars like Fernando Poe Jr., Joseph Estrada, and Lito Lapid. Many of this actors gained so much popularity that they were able to hold offices in the Philippine Government.

Philippine Action Films have currently experiences a ressurgences of some sort thanks to independent productions giving new life to an old genre.

Indie Films are from the creation of our very own filmmakers with their creative vision and innovation. Their works are mostly made, direct, written and produced on their own. They control and shaping the story on their own with a low-budget.

To say that independent film making has become the soul of Philippine cinema is no longer an exaggeration. For years, Filipino independent filmmakers like Kidlat Tahimik (Perfumed Nightmare, 1977), Raymond Red (Anino, 2001), and Brillante Mendoza (Kinatay, 2009) among many others have received critical acclaim worldwide.

Popular Music

Music

The Philippines music are a mix of European, American and native sounds. Influenced by the music of the Philippines 377 year-long heritage of colonial Spain, Western rock and roll, hip-hop and popular music from the United States, the folk music of population Austronesian and Indo-Malayan music Gamelan.

Modern Pop Music in the Philippines is heavily influenced by the 70's Manila Sound genre that dominated that decade. It soon transitioned into OPM ( Orignal Pilipino Music) and has been popular with the youth today.

Foreign music from the US and Korea has also dominated Philippine Music Culture.

a musical genre in the Philippines that began in the mid-70s in Manila. The genre peaked in the mid- to late-70s.

It is often considered the "bright side" of the Philippine martial law era and has influenced most of the modern genres in the country by being the forerunner to OPM.

Acts like APO-Hiking Society, Asin, Rey Valera, and Sharon Cuneta became pioneers of the genre.

OPM

Originally referred only to a genre of Philippine pop songs, mostly ballads, that became popular after the collapse of its predecessor, the Manila sound of the late 1970s. Currently, the term "OPM" has been a catch-all description for all popular music composed and performed by Filipinos. It has continued to reach other genres like Rock, Rap, and Hip-Hop

The most Famous OPM acts would be the Eraserheads, Parokya ni Edgar, Francis Magalona, Rivermaya, and Gary Valenciano

Rise of Indie Music and Experimental Sounds

Modern Filipino Music

Although Filipino indie is heavily influenced by styles from Europe and the United States, these songs are always mixed with local sounds and tell stories more relatable to the people from the country. Some talk about what it’s like to live by the sea, or more serious topics like the drug war. Others simply tap into universal emotions like heartbreak, which has become somewhat of a subgenre called “hugot” or “to draw out feelings.”

Video Games

Though Banned during the Marcos Dictatorship. Video game's popularity in the Philippines has become a huge part in modern day youth culture. Changing the idea of art and competitive sports. Video games has become an industry that arose in the late 20th century and continues to grow.

The Philippines maintains a sub-culture of die-hard Filipino gamers having game developers, streamers, esports, and online cafe's dedicated in spreading the culture of Video Games through computers, mobile phones, and consoles.

With the rise of social media and streaming sites Filipino's are able to stream let's plays of video games showing themselves playing different genres of games.

Streaming in itself has become a source of income for some Filipino's earning Money through Donation or monetization and Product Promotion.

Game Development

The Philippines is a minor player regarding the game development industry. In 2011, it was reported that the local industry only has a 0.02% market share of the $90 billion global industry. The majority of the game development industry is focused on outsourcing to foreign companies rather than creation of local content.

But that is not to say that there are no Games Published here in the Philippines. Several titles have come out in the island nation most are mobile games, and others are accessible in an online digital market called STEAM

Esports and Competetive Gaming

Esports and Competitive Gaming

the eSports scene in the Philippines was made up almost completely of amateurs. Though competitive video games like Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and League of Legends are mainstays across the country’s many computer shops and Internet cafés, most saw them as a hobby.

The turning point came in 2016, when a Philippine team beat out a major team at The International Dota 2 Championships defeated European powerhouse team.

Currently Tournaments around the islands are held with different teams competing. The most notable current esport is that of COD and MLBB

The two Most Popular Traditional Sports in the Philippines

Traditional

Being that the Philippines is an island nation that is composed of different people from different culture the same can be said to the traditional sports here in the Philippines. The prominent feature of most traditional sport is that they are mainly combat sports ( a sport of fighting with technique and peak performance), The two most popular among traditional sports are Arnis/ Eskrima and Sipa.

Arnis

Arnis is the national martial art sport of the Philippines. It is also known as Eskrima and Kali. This sport actually emphasizes weapon based fighting which is done using knives, bladed weapons, sticks and various improvised weapons. It also includes hand to hand combat, grappling and weapon disarming methods.

July 27, 2009, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed Republic Act No. 9850 into law, declaring Arnis as the Philippine National Martial Art and Sport.

Sipa

Sipa is a traditional sport of the Philippines. It is a difficult sport to play, where players are required to have high skills of ball control, speed and agility.

The sport can be played both indoors and outdoors, using a soft ball. The court used is similar in dimensions to that of a tennis court, with a net in the middle. A match can be played in singles, doubles or a team of four format. The objective of the sport is to kick the ball to the other side of the net on to the opponent’s side.

Individual Sports

Individual

An individual Sport is a a sport which an individual competitor competes in a match with another individual. Examples of this sport includes Billiards, Power Lifting and Combat Sports. The most prominent individual sport here in the Philippines is boxing.

Boxing

Boxing is among the most popular individual sports in the Philippines. Some Filipino boxers such as Manny Pacquiao, Gabriel Elorde and Pancho Villa are recognized internationally. The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines is the governing body for amateur boxing in the country.

The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines current goal is for the Phillippines to earn its first Gold Medal in Boxing in the Olympics.

The biggest draw for a boxer ever produced by the Philippines is Sen.Manny Pacquiao. It is said that crime in the country drops to zero percent everytime Pacquiao has a match.

Team Sport

Team Sports

Team sports are played by a team of 2 or more individuals that plays against another team. Vital aspects of this type of sports are teamwork, strategy, and communication between team members. The most popular team sports in the Philippines would be Basketball, Volleyball, and Football (Soccer).

Basketball

Introduced during the American Era in the Philippines, Basketball has been a prominent sport in the Philippines. Its not uncommon to see a basketball court in every Barangay. There are Multiple Leagues in the Philippines but the most prominent would be the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) being the oldest basketball league in asia and the second oldest in the world

Volleyball

The Volleyball scene in the Philippines has continue to grow thanks the popularity of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) that holds tournaments in the country that is broadcasted in national television networks

Though having one of the oldest Soccer teams in Asia, Soccer in the Philippines declined during the late 20th Century but has now recovered due to the stint of the Philippine national team in the 2010 AFF Championship.

The Governing body of Soccer in the Philippines is the Philippine Football Federation which holds the Philippines Football League.

Modern Philippine politics has been shaped by two powerful families during the 20th Century. This two being The Marcos Family and the Aquino-Cojuangco Family, which forever changed the political landscape of the Philippines.

A Notable family currently rising through the Ranks is the Duterte Family. After Rodrigo Duterte won the Presidential Race during 2016, the Duterte family begun earning supporters but also gained multiple criticisms.

Other Notable figures have been apparent in Modern Philippine Politics in good and bad ways. This notable figures are either hailed as intellectuals or criticized for their dubious work.

women start to abandon mini-dresses for a more modest clothing such as maxi skirts. Vintage clothing from the Victorian Era of the west also became popular as long sleeves, laces, and collars became popular in dresses. Bell bottom pants started to become popular.

Men also wore Bell bottoms often in bright colors, similar to the women. The turtle neck became popular as well as sweater vests, colorful bright patterned polos and pants.

Most of the women began wearing inspired clothes. Also, women became interested in 1960s fashion and began replicating that style. Men also began wearing preppy clothes.Skinny jeans and shorts proved to be popular among the men and these came up in different colors.

mid-2010s entered, women began wearing more modest clothing as the fashion brands started to market 1950s and 1960s inspired clothing. Denim pants was replaced by skirts and leggings. Men began to wear more formal clothes. Dresses replaced the casual t-shirts and jeans worn by the women while Chinos replaced the denim pants worn by men.

By the late 1950s, women started to wear dresses and with floral prints and fuller knee-length skirts.Summer and Day dresses became popular, as well as the pencil skirts and cardigans.

The Barong Tagalog became popular once again to be worn as a formal wear, popularized by the then-President Ramon Magsaysay.

Men started to wear dark, simple and mostly oversized clothes, moving away to the brightly colored clothes of the 1980s.

Women also wore loose, simple and casual clothing such as oversized shirts, denim shorts, denim jeans, simple blouses and sneakers. Skirts weren't as popular as denim throughout the decade.

Also, a hairstyle called "cachupoy" was considered popular among teenage boys. It was a straight hairstyle that has a middle parting at the center, most teen celebrities sported this kind of hairstyle.

In the first part of the decade, the concept of innerwear as an outerwear was popularized resulting in the popularity of spaghetti strap clothes. Men still followed the 1990s fashion with hip-hop inspired of clothing, wearing cargo pants and oversized T-shirts.

By the mid-2000s, colorful clothes began to rise again. Men started wearing flannel and checkered polos. At the end of the decade, people saw the mixture of clothing from uggboots worn with short shorts and t-shirts to dresses worn over with leggings

Due to the rise of British pop culture that spread in United States and other parts of the world, fashion started to change. A new kind of dress invented by Mary Quant, called the miniskirt, mini dresses started to become popular and mod style fashions also emerged.

Men's fashion shifted towards a more youthful vibe, influenced by the rising Teenage culture seen in Hollywood and by various Teen-oriented Filipino films where they started wearing polos and pants, replacing the suit and coats

Women, usually young adults, also started to wear clothes with shoulder pads while teenagers started wearing neon-colored clothes. Miniskirts also came back in popularity. Hairstyles were also emphasized as most women had their hair curled.

Men's fashion had a shift as they started to wear brightly colored t-shirts or polo shirts and denim jeans for a casual look, throwing away the more formal look. Teenage boys also wore pastel and neon-colored jackets, polos, pants, short shorts and t-shirts. Converse All-Stars shoes were also popular among the teenagers.

Language

Language is another important element of culture and fundamental to communication. Our culture can be thought of as a lens through which we experience the world and develop shared meaning .It follows that the language that we use is created in response to cultural needs. In other words, there is obvious relationship between the way we talk and how we perceive the world.

Language in Philippine Pop culture

the use of ‘jejemon’, quote and unquote language also known as the informal language such as the gay lingo, which has been part of our expression especially in applying it in social media. Also, the use of emojis that enhanced how we communicate through text or messages because it provided more emotions to our means of communication.

Majority of the Filipinos have a good speaking skills using English language because primarily English is considered as a second language in the Philippines. It also a quite intriguing that recently Philippine got the sexiest speaking accent in among all the other speakers in Southeast Asia.
