Shoji Hamada

Origins

- Born in 1894 Kawasaki, Japan

- Graduated from Tokyo Technical College in 1916

- From 1919 to 1923, travelled and learned about a multitude of diverse ceramic and craft traditions.

- In 1952, Hamada travelled with Soetsu Yanagi throughout the United States giving ceramic demonstrations and workshops.

1913-1916 - Attended Tokyo Technical College, studying Ceramics

1920-1924 - Joined Bernard Leach at the St. Ives Pottery in Cornwall, England

1924- Married to Kazue Kimura

1926- Founded the Japanese Craft Society

1952-1953- Toured multiple different cultures throughout the United States and Europe.

1964- Received the Japanese Medal of Honour with Purple Ribbon

1973- Received an Honorary Doctorate at King's College in London

1978- Died in Mashiko, Japan

- Hamada artisitc style was influenced by a wide variety of folk ceramics including English medieval pottery, Okinawan stoneware, and Korean pottery.

- His exhbiit shows his collection of folk crafts from Japan and abroad
