Indigenous Population In Canada At Its Peak

At this time in Canadian history it is estimated that the indigenous population was 200,000- 2.5 million people combined speaking about 450 different languages.

The War Of 1812

During the war of 1812 many indigenous peoples fought for their land and Independence. Around 10,000 Indigenous people died in the war.

The Indian Act

IN 1876 the Indian act was passed, this meant that Indigenous peoples freedoms got restricted, this included less reserve land, banning their form of government and religion and implementing Residential Schools.

World War 1

Around 5000 Indigenous people served in the military during World War 1. All of them were denied veteran benefits after the war.

During World War 2 around 5000-8000 Indigenous served but yet again unfortunately they did not receive the same amount of recognition or support as other veterans.

Voting Rights &

The 60s Scoop

1960

In 1960 Canadians with "Indian Status" are given the right to vote without losing their status. While that is definitely a good thing something far worse also started in 1960. During the 60s scoop thousands of Indigenous children were taken by social workers and sent to Residential schools.

The Start Of Change

1982

In 1982 the constitution is changed in order to recognize treaty rights and to consult with the Indigenous peoples on issues. The assembly of First Nations is created to promote the rights of Indigenous peoples.

Formal Apology

In 2008 the prime minister Steven Harper apologizes to First Nations and Indigenous students of Residential schools. Then in 2021 a investigation is launched into unmarked graves at Residential school locations.
