Independence

-colonies became economically independent

-heavy taxes on goods have been placed by Britain

->Revolutionary War (1775-1783)

->"Founding Fathers" create Declaration of Independence

-announced July 4th 1776->guideline for Constitution of 1787

-executive, judicial, legislative->system of checks and balances

-history begins 1492 with "discovery" of America

-since 1600 european colonists arrive in America

-> mostly from England

-by 1770->13 British colonies on the northeastern seaboard

->still dependent on european countries

Reasons for the colonists:

-desire to practice their own religion

-take advantage of the opportunities granted by the continent

-some also sent to avoid prison or to repay debts

Native Americans today

-since 1960s Indians are called "Native Amercians"

-Today: 2.5 million Native Americans and 1.5million who are part Native Americans

-about 50% live in reservations

-> some are more, some are less wealthy because of that
