On September 2017 the Trump Administration put an end to the Obama- era program, which protected thousands of immigrant youth.

DREAMERS

These young immigrants are called dreamers because it comes from the Dream Act that was introduced in 2001, but the latest version was turned down in 2012. Although it was voted down the name remained.

WHO QUALIFIED FOR DACA?

  • Immigrant youth who came to the U.S. before the age 16

  • An immigrant child who was currently studying, or graduated from highschool, or earned a GED.

  • You had to be under the age of 31

When Did It Commence?

President Barack Obama announced the executive action in 2012,which protected undocumented immigrants from deportation due to congressional inaction.

  • 16% bought thier first home
  • 70% got better pay
  • 65% bought a car', and more educational opportunties
  • Recieve a social security number, allowing them to obtain a work permit, obtain a drivers license, and also allowing them to appy for scholarships, and student loans

PROTECTED IMMIGRANTS

This temporary permit benefitted 800,000 young immigrants. Although this policy did not grant legal status, it did give immigrants a sense of protection because they were now able to study, and work in the U.S. without fear of deportation.

  • Officials are processing more than 34,000 first time applicants.
  • Mexico is the biggest country of origin, the next two are El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
  • Qualified immigrants were able to defer from deportation and legally live in the U.S. for two years.

Why did the Program End?

During the summer several state attorneys wrote a letter to Donald Trump, asking him to end the Obama-era Program

If Congress does not do anything about the situation there could be as many as 983 undocumented people losing thier protected status everyday.

Honoring current and new applicants

  • Current DACA Recipients are still protected
  • New applicants that were recieved by September 5 are still being processed, as well as renewals that were recieved by October 5

If Congress does not do anything abouth the problem, immigrant youth will live in constant fear of deportation due to their unprotected status.
