Lara Jean is beginning her senior year, and is expecting a lot from this year. She's hoping to attend the University of Virginia with her boyfriend, Peter Kavinsky, who has already been accepted due to a lacrosse scholarship.
Lara Jean discovers that she has been rejected from U.V.A., her dream school, waitlisted at University of North Carolina, and accepted to the College of William and Mary. Lara Jean never expected anything other than U.V.A. but now that life threw her a curve ball she's speechless and confused. She hates to think this but she got better academical scores than Peter so why her?
After finding out she was accepted to William & Mary, her and Peter decide that she'll go there for a year and transfer to U.V.A. the following year. They also make plans where Peter could drive up every weekend since it's only thirty minutes away.
Lara Jean's sister, Margot comes home from her university in Ireland with a new boyfriend, Ravi. When she arrives, Margot is still surprised with Lara Jean's father relationship with Ms. Rothschild and is tense by the way Ms. Rothschild acts at their own house. On the other hand, Lara Jean's father is quite surprised at the intimacy between Ravi and Margot, and is visibly uncomfortable.
Lara Jean's father announces to his three daughters that he will be proposing to Trina (Ms. Rothschild). Even though all of them agree, it is still evident that Margot is discomfited with this idea.
While Lara Jean is supporting Peter at his lacrosse game, she spots his estranged father and talks to him. Peter's dad reveals that he's been wanting to talk with Peter again but is not sure that Peter is open to the idea. Lara Jean decides to convince Peter to talk to his dad again. Thus, Peter inviting him to their graduation.
John Ambrose, an old spark of Lara Jean's, texts her that Stormy, a resident at a retirement home she volunteered at, has passed away. She is grief-stricken by this, but will forever remember Stormy and her vivid personality.
While at the memorial service, John Ambrose and Lara Jean catch up.
Lara Jean discovers that she has officially been accepted into U.N.C.. She alerts this to her best friend, Chris, who prompts them to drive to North Carolina to visit the campus.
Walking her first steps at U.N.C., Lara Jean could tell she really liked the atmosphere. Experiencing all the people at U.N.C., and remembering what Stormy said to her, "Never say no when you really want to say yes", she decides that she will go to this school instead of William and Mary College.
Lara Jeans announces her new decision to her family and they're ecstatic for her. Except Peter, who is uneasy with this idea because they're going to be so far and he doesn't know if he could drive that far after lacrosse practices. Lara Jean felt like he wasn't happy for her, but he apologized after a party for treating her like that.
For a graduation gift, Lara Jean's father surprises Lara Jean and her two sisters with a trip to Korea.
When Peter learns about this, this prompts a mini fight between the couple. Peter is frustrated that they'll barely have time to spend with each other before they both go off to college.
Peter's dad doesn't show up to the graduation, and Peter acts like he is nonchalant about it. He constantly tries to avoid the topic, but Lara Jean and everybody watching could tell that he's deeply hurt by his father's promises to go.
It's Senior Beach Week and our main couple's relationship is still in a tense spot where their moods are quite erratic. They chat with John Ambrose for a bit about colleges, how Lara Jean is going to U.N.C., and they meet John Ambrose's girlfriend.
After the meetup, Peter makes a snarky remark about Dipti and John Ambrose's relationship not lasting in college. This drives Lara Jean to the edge and this starts their second fight ever because he was acting obnoxious to an old friend. Lara storms back to her beach house.
Lara Jean drinks some alcohol and ends up acting very differently from herself. She tries to have intercourse with Peter, but he can't do it because there's too much on his mind with his distant dad, Lara Jean not going to U.V.A., and lacrosse practice. This leads to their third fight.
Peter Kavinsky's mom ambushes Lara Jean and asks her to have a conversation. The mother asks Lara Jean to break up with Peter for the greater good. She wants Peter to have an unbiased freshman year at college with no girlfriend. Lara Jean is flabbergasted, but after more chit-chat, she leaves and really considers their relationship's fate.
At Trina's Bachelorette party, Lara Jean once again gets drunk. Being intoxicated leads Lara Jean to break up with Peter and admitting these that aren't true, just to "protect him." Peter storms off being profoundly devastated. The morning after, Lara Jean regrets the words she has said.
Chris leaves to fly to the Dominican Republic to work on a farm. Lara Jean realizes that the chapter of high school is actually ended and everyone is on their path to something bigger and better.
Lara Jean informs Trina about her break up with Peter and all her regrets. Trina assures her that if she wanted to take everything she said yesterday back, she could. Trina proclaims that she can tell that Peter really loves Lara Jean, so much that he would even plan a bachelor's party for her dad.
On the day of Lara Jean's father and Trina's wedding, we find out the Margot is finally accustomed to Trina. Lara Jean is constantly looking around for Peter. When she finally sees him, an apology ensues. Peter reveals his fears about them being so far apart and Lara Jean corrects the things she said on the day of their breakup. They make up and get back together.
It's the night before Lara Jean leaves for U.N.C.. Peter and her are spending their last day together for awhile. Their love story started with a love letter. Lara Jean and Peter both don't know where the relationship is going to go but in the moment, everything is just right. Lara Jean believes they will last.
