Enterprise Computers

NEWS

Business oriented computers many types of software: data base management, relationship management, etc.

UPDATE 1

Super Computers

A computer that performs near the highest operational rate. These computers are more so used for the scientific and engineering world

Cray-1

  • created in 1976
  • comes in the shape of a "C" which allows a reduction of length in wires
  • Contributors of speed: high packaging density of integrated circuits and a Freon cooling system
  • Main works for US defence (design of simulation of nuclear weapons) and forecasting weather

Columbia Supercomputer

  • Introduced in 2005
  • important to NASA's returned to manned spaceflight
  • used in space vehicle analysis
  • used in astrophysics
  • single system increased supercomuter capacity 10-fold
  • later it is removed for two other new supercomputers

Roadrunner Supercomputer

  • created/introduced in 2009
  • first computer to reach a sustained performance of 1 petaflop
  • used two different microprocessors: IBM POWER XCell L8i and AMD Opreton
  • modelled decay of US nuclear arsenal
  • analyzed financial data
  • rendered 3D medical images

UPDATE 2

Mainfrmaes

Computers made to be used by large organizations. It supports many workstations and peripherlas. Used for bulk processings.

Tandem-16

  • created/introduced in 1975
  • made for online transaction processing
  • first comercial fault tolerating
  • used mostly in the bankung industry
  • able to run during expansion and repair
  • the start of "Non-Stop" series that was used for early ATM's

DEC VAX

  • made in 1978
  • it rivaled much more expensive mainfames
  • the better performance of its time
  • had the ability to address 4 GB of virtual memory
  • they were backward compatible, so that allowed it to preserve investment owners of previous DEC computers
  • used in indutries like science, engineering, and research

Personal

Computers

ANNOUNCEMENTS

A computer for one user at a time. Made for the people of homes and not necessarily industries or engineering.

Laptops

COMPANY

NEWS

Computers used in different environments. They include a screen, keyboard, and touchpad.

Apple -1

  • introduced in 1976
  • designed by Steve Wozniak and marketed by Steve Jobs
  • a single board comuter for hobbyists
  • about 200 computers were sold before the follow up of Apple II

TITLE

iMAC

  • introduced in 1998
  • they sell for $1,300
  • had 233-MHz G3 processor
  • 4 GB hard drive, 32 MB of RAM, a CD ROM drive, and 15" moniter
  • an ease-of-use computer

TITLE

MacBook Air

  • released in 2008
  • introduced as a light-weight, thin laptop with high capacity
  • incorporated things such as an integrated camera and WiFi capabilities
  • traditional hard drive replaced with solid statedisk

TITLE

Commodore PET

  • released in 1977
  • it came with 4 or 8 KB of memory
  • built-in cassette drive, membrane keyboard
  • built mostly for schools and the home
  • used a MOS Technologies 6502 microprocessor

TITLE

SPECIAL DATES

Desktop Computers

It is a personal computer that can fit on or under a desk. Its main set up is a moitor, a keyboard, a mouse, or a form factor that can be horizontal or vertical. It is made to stay in a sole location.

TRS-80

  • introduced in 1977
  • sold 10,00 units after its release
  • Z80 microprocessor
  • Video display
  • 4 KB memory
  • built-in basic programming language
  • cassette storage
  • popular among homes and schools

Deskpro 386

  • introduced in 1986
  • one of the first to use Intel 80386 chip
  • 32 bit microprocessor
  • 4 million operations per second
  • 4 KB of memeory

Portable Computers

WHAT'S NEXT

Personal Computers designed to be easily transported. Larger and less easy to transport than a notebook computer.

KEEP IN MIND

Osborne 1

  • introduced in 1981
  • cost $1,795
  • first mass produced portable computer
  • came with a 5 inch display and a modem
  • 64 KB of memory
  • 2 5.25 floppy disk drives

CHANGES

Macintosh Portable

  • introduced in 1989
  • cost $6,500
  • the sales were weak even if the computer had promising aspects
  • it was very heavy ( not an attraction for the GP)

Smartphones

A mobile phone that functions like a computer would. Has many similar features: download, connection to the internet, etc.

CHANGES

J-phone / J-SHO4

  • Introduced in 2000
  • first camera phone
  • manufactured digital phone
  • camera; maximum resolution of 0.11 megapixels

  • from Japan

TITLE

Apple iPhone

  • launched in 2007
  • had many integrations of other physical forms on other devices; music player, web browser, and a cell phone
  • Had a new function for applications- "Apps"
  • also had built in GPS, camera, texting, calendar, weather, etc.

TITLE
