Who Is Ernest Shackleton? What Is His Role In Shipwreck?

Who Is Ernest Shackleton? What Is His Role ...

Ernest Shackleton is the leader of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. He is the Boss of Endurance and its crew members. Ernest Shackleton plays a huge role in the book Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World. He is a strong leader in Shipwreck and influences all of the other crew members of "Endurance". He has the responibility of taking care of the crew, never, ever giving up on them, and always being there to return back to them. He is the foundation of the crew members and without him, they would be lost.

Examples of How Shackleton Helps The Crew

Examples of How Shackleton Helps T...

  • Shackleton has to help his crew a lot. He does small things that make a great difference. For example, he burns coal to keep the engines fired for when they are ready to escape the icy prison.
  • Also, when the crew members have to escape from Endurance, each man is given a two-pound limit on personal gear. So, Shackleton also takes part of this two-pound limit, even though he is the Boss. "In a dramatic gesture, Shackleton took his gold cigarette case and handful of gold coins from his pocket and dropped them in the snow," according to page 51 of Shipwreck.

Personality

Ernest Shackleton was a very strong-willed, "take-charge" kind of person. He was determined, encouranging, positive, confident, courageous, proud, kind, gentle, fair, and trustworthy. He had amazing leadership skills. For example, he was very strong-willed, because despite the weather conditions, he got through without hesitation of his decisions. He was positive and cheery, even when the other crew members were not. He always made the best of things. For example, on page 24, "making the best of things, he took apart a walking stick made of whalebone discs threaded on a metal rod, and used those as poker chips. Card playing became a regular routine." Shackleton also maintained a routine in order to keep the crew from going insane from the dreadful cabin fever, as the author explains on pages 31 through 38. Finally, Shackleton was once paid a great compliment by one of the men, "'We knew you'd come back.'" This shows that Shackleton is a great leader.

Major Challenges

Shackleton had several challenges while he was on the Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which greatly influenced his life. For example, when he was on "Endurance," the ship broke completely, the crew members had to provide their own food, the journey was long and tiring, it was very, very, very cold out, land was hard to come by, and they had to suffer boredom. Also, even though Shackleton was very good at it, he had to be positive and responsible, even when things were in an awful state. These are definitely some pretty big challenges in his adventurous life.

Fun Fact

Shackleton had a future as a doctor, according to his father.
